death

Like many of you Dr Bob is fed up with the electronic drivel filling his inbox but every now and again there is one that catches his eye and raises a smile.  ‘Evidence of the use of pandemic flu to depopulate USA’ was one such email.  Circulated by someone in Sheffield Teaching Hospitals from the operating theatres, who may have been sniffing something they shouldn’t, and circulated to every email user group, for some bizarre reason starting with ‘All Nursery Nurses’. It contains a link to a delightful conspiracy to the effect that the World Health Organisation (WHO), the UN and for some strange reason the US government are going to decimate the population of America with a toxic flu vaccine.  What they seem to be most concerned about were emergency powers that allow the confiscation of property and guns.

I remember meeting a previous Director of WHO, a most amiable Finnish man who helped me with my bags at St Polten railway station on the way to a conference.  That must have been a stonker of a hangover.

But a Dark Peak member has sent me some press reminders of more relevant threats to our health.  I will leave the burning genitals, hippo swallowing, buzzing undies, deck chair hazards and leave you with something that touches the deepest masculine fears:

Weekend 26th/27th September

Whernside.   Thanks, Lewis, for helping out with finding these results. Must be Matthew Speake’s home ground, repeating his win of last year, and that excellent Dentdale result…

Nine Edges. Steve Matthews "was at the 9 Edges on Saturday. Weather was great for this 20 mile trail from Fairholmes down to the Robin Hood. A good day out was had by all, raising money for EMRT, although I note that despite a 10am start not everyone had finished by 6pm – note there were walkers, climbers and mountain bikers all involved as well as runners. Results for the winning places are attached. Not too many DPFR there. I will forward a link to the full results when they are up on EMRT’s website. "
Need to wait a while – “ They won’t be on the EMRT website for a while because their webmaster is on holiday.”

Three Peaks Bike Race:- with a win for Nick Craig, ahead of Rob Jebb. Lynn sends:-  “3 Peaks cyclo cross was apparently a battle from start to finish (I was still going up Pen y Gent when I heard Nick had won!) with Rob Jebb arriving first at all the summits and Nick Craig passing him on the descents.  Loads of photos and a report  . Me, Darrell, Kev Saville, Anne Beresford and Hilary Bloor all took part along with loads of other fell runners. It was a good day out but I have to say bikes really aren’t meant for carrying up hills!!”

Saturday.
RAB Mountain Marathon – Howgills “It may be a family affair (what with Rich organising it, numerous members of the family helping out and me running it) but I have to say that this years RAB MM was a cracker! The weather was fantastic with wall to wall sunshine on Saturday following a foggy early morning start. Sunday was overcast, some clag on the tops and with a bit of a breeze making it better for running. The courses were excellently planned and challenging with lots of scope for route choice – most of which involved a slog up one of the numerous steep sided valleys! The overnight camp on a nice dry grassy field (next to the Cross Keys Temperance Inn) was just a small car journey up the road from the start in Sedbergh but about a 26 mile journey for the Elite runners (and probably not much less for everybody else). Day 2 was a return trek over much of the same ground from the previous day but with some dummy controls thrown in meaning that route planning the night before was pointless. Lots of Dark Peakers competing and some good results in all classes. Dave and I used it as a warm up for the OMM but wished we hadn’t shown Stewart Bellamy where 3 controls were that had rubbed off his map – it cost us 3rd place!  Simon P “

And:- “At last, the Lake District Mountain Trial Committee (minus me because I have resigned – although not because of this!) have finally seen sense and awarded the 3rd Men’s team prize to Dark Peak (Matt, Gavin and Me). I will collect your prize vouchers for you lads at the Hodgsons. Simon”

World Masters 2010. Zagreb always seemed an awkward journey this year, but next year is much easier. The venue is Korbielow, Poland. SW of Cracow, NW of Zakopane, near the Slovakian border. Site is  www.wmmrc2010.org  but not up & running yet. Date is Saturday September 4th.  Below 55 or 60 (not sure of cut off) do 10km with almost 1000m ascent, 60 & above do 8km with almost as much ascent.  Sounds hard !
But – there are, at present, direct flights from Leeds to Krakow, and Google Maps has it as 114km journey after that. Sounds like a good few days away, especially if flights can be booked early.

Langdale Substitutions. Much as we’d like to fiddle internal substitutions, the organisers have the waiting list, and the correct procedure is to notify the organiser if you’re unable to run. Crafty substitutions will cause trouble…

Saturday -  Three Shires, Entry on Day, points for the Lakeland Classics? It might be right busy, being a similar race to Langdale.
Parking will be at the quarries, Hodge Close, same as last year. This worked fine, but leave extra time for the 15mins walk in. Take all your stuff to the start and leave a bag there – and not the same  bag as everyone else…
route notes  – the weather looks to be set fair, so no real clag problems…
Results:- could someone please copy down from the sticky labels , and send through to the webmaster, as I’ll not be running….

Travel – Willy is driving up with room – see Comments. Hopefully this will help Nick Kirk “seeking to share a lift for the day and return the same day, 07976 264519 or nbkirk

Mike’s 40th birthday weekend. Hazel sends:” We’re not planning anything big but are hoping that people might be able to stay up in Langdale after Three Shires Race and join us in the Old Dungeon Ghyll for a drink.  Camping is obviously available at the Great Langdale campsite and on Sunday people have the perfect opportunity to recee all or some of the Langdale route. Mike knows about this but what he doesn’t know is that I’m trying to get him a very large collection of beer so if you speak to anybody please ask them to bring a bottle of beer, preferably less than 4.5%.”

Lantern Pike.
Good Shepherd – (
Mytholmroyd)

Commonwealth Mountain Events – Keswick  all weekend, something for most people, running or watching, but don’t think it’s for me…
Lloyd is running things for the Isle of Man, and some will remember Marcus Scottney, running that long, long thing.(somewhere there is a list of entrants…). And Lizzie will be running…

Sunday:- Dalehead.
              Stanage Struggle
              Great North Run
at £42.00 entry….

Grasmere Sports Results

Great Kinder Beer Barrel Race 2009.
“DPFR’s elite team won again with a clear three minutes lead, it’s third successive victory in this gruelling race.  The 8 man team comprised Oli Johnson, Rob Little, Neil Northrop, Rob Baker, Richard Guillaume, Peter Hodges, Tom Edwards and Matt Speake making his debut appearance with this well-oiled machine.
Last to start, the favourites utilised a cunning plan to gain 30 seconds or so before the climb, then pulled back lots of places on the descent, where they displayed a total disregard for personal safety
After delivery from the Snake Inn to the Edale, the 72 pints beer was summarily despatched to reduce the risk of post race dehydration.   The despatch time for the beer mirrored the delivery time of 47 minutes.
Rob Davison’s much abused racing ladder suffered it’s annual outing with stoic determination, and sledged most of the precipitous descent into the Grindsbrook.  Rob was in a Fat Boys Team and was unlucky enough to be overtaken by his ladder on the plateau, only to see it plummeting downhill in an abandoned manner.”

Final Summer Series Race. Crashout Direct,  And indeed thanks to Nicky and all the organisers and participants. Look out for the forthcoming Winter Series.

Mountain Trial : results   and also this which shows the maps of the route and routes taken. Apparently “long and hot”. Have a look through, some very impressive results lurking within…
   John Coe sends:-“
There were a few of us Mountain Trial Novices among the strong Dark Peak contingent that travelled to Eskdale for this superbly organised event. It started with a flagged half mile to the map pick-up point, which was the first we knew of the course ahead of us. There were 3 courses – Men’s Long and Short and Women’s. All were apparently excellent, but the given spec of 16m/8000 didn’t quite prepare those of us in the Long… our route traversed the Wasdale side of the Scafell range to Seathwaite Fell and Allen Crags in Borrowdale, then crossed Bowfell etc to Wrynose and a long climb to Great Carrs, before dropping into the Duddon via a choice of checkpoints. The sting in the tail was a hideous crawl through the woods below Harter, followed by a leg sapping finale of knee deep bog and heather, and a hard to find final checkpoint. Most of us thought it was quite a bit harder than the Wasdale – it was certainly longer. Fortunately the weather was great – if a bit too warm as the day wore on…
The Club did excellently on the prize front in all three courses. The Women won 1st Team – Kirsty B-J(3rd) ,Nicky Spinks(6th) ,Joanne Armistead(20th). Men won 1st Team for first time in the Trial’s history I think – Jon Morgan (4th) ,John Hunt(5th), Jon Coe(8th). Matt, Si Patton and Gavin would have taken 2nd team prize except for a strange ad hoc ruling that we’d had too many prizes! A lot of club members got individual prizes in the various categories.
The Long was won by Steve Birkinshaw (4:54:54), Short by Josh Beech (2:47:35), and Ladies by Helene Whitaker (4:30:18). Splendid free food after and a superb day out. “

Dark Peak Edale 4 Peaks Race. “The weather for the first running of the Edale 4 Peaks Race was pretty good- high cloud base, cooling wind and quite unusually for Edale this Summer, no rain. I expected 10 runners maximum so surprised to have 19 starting. New Dark Peaker Dave Aucott finished first in 1.30.31 just a few seconds ahead of Dave Taylor.  First lady was Joan Waller. Post race refreshments were in the Rambler.”
DT – a good effort, Andy, for what is some classic Edale course. The more of these the better, throughout the winter when it’s a quiet weekend, to avoid travelling…

Yorkshireman (Haworth) . An event to slip in when there’s no real fell race locally around. I did the Half, 14/15mile or nearby, all runnable, tracks, lanes, conduits, fell, plenty of dry firm running.
These videos are getting good, this is by Keighley, the organisers.

World Masters – Zagreb. results, for those who know these people, Ben Grant was 11th – V60. Geoff Howard (English V65 Champion) was 5th. First Ladies V45 Team. And 1st V45 for Craig Roberts.

BOFRA Lothersdale (Skipton). Only one mile, similar in idea to a short gritstone burst, flat out effort for a short intense climb. The inimitable commentary from Roger Ingham , MBE – he knows his stuff and enlivens any of these village shows, mentioned that this is the 2nd oldest Fell Race, one year away from Killington Sports – where does the Hallam Chase figure in this?

Exterminator :- The results service from Mark has been excellent throughout the year, many thanks, DPFR results are out , and let’s not take for granted all the hard work involved in maintaining this well supported series. Many strong indications of Relay Potential…
DT – Peris Horseshoe isn’t that easy, but doing that and the Exterminator next day is going some…(Dave Sykes)
And when will Jon Morgan line up with the rest of us, Dentdale, Exterminator – and was it Leg 4 change at Patterdale also?

Longshaw
Trunce (9)results

Helvellyn Triathlon:- Rob Davison an excellent 60th overall, 21st in his category. Looks as though he pulled up a lot of places on the run. Anyone else there?

Peris Horseshoe:- results. Martin has kindly copied down some results from the sticky labels, There may be others, full results in about a week, and also photos to follow .  “Weather was kind to us, with improving visibility as the day wore on (apart from on Snowdon).”
Some photos on this website already” – and also here.
DSCF0375 No prizes for recognising this – more will be on DP photos.

Great Yorkshire Run:- anyone running round Sheffield’s roads? results – far too complicated for me to sift through…

Bullock Smithy – some results are here , not easy to interpret as yet. Nicky looks to be round in 11hrs 31., which appears extremely well up…” I had a really good run and was 4th overall until the last 2 miles when I got lost in a housing estate and was overtaken by a group of 7 (including 2 women) who all finished in 11.27 while I finished in 11.31. So think that made me 11th! “

Shelf Moor. – with some searching, results can be found here. , loads of picture too including one of the winning team in the river cooling down!.  Ian sends” A great race with an excellent descent in perfect weather. well marshalled and loads of prizes including Rescue Ale for the first 30ish. More beer for the team prize, I’ve got Tony Heron’s”
DT – Championship next year with Coniston, Holme Moss, Ennerdale ? (only hearsay…)

Ben Nevis – results -seems to have been right horrible? Indeed it was, as Nick Kirk sends:- ““At the start the organisers announced that the wind was 40mph with gusts up to 60mph, a chill factor on top of -1C and visibility less than 10m. Being a ‘newcomer’ to the race this was very daunting, especially as the cloud base level was only few hundred metres, at least we did not see how far it was to the top. The weather was foul with heavy rain throughout the whole of the race with very strong winds around Red Burn and along the plateaux. However, the race was very well organised with excellent mountain rescue cover. It was very wet and slippery underfoot which made for a very interesting descent especially the steep scree and then grassy bank into red Burn. Jon Coe had an excellent run followed by the rest of the DP travelling contingent. I will definitely enter this race again and would recommend it, Nick Kirk”
DT – Rob Jebb home first, with John Coe, Russell Beresford and Tim Mackey up there…
Comments:- Have a look, 10th Team , and that makes 21 Ben’s for Nev Boler….

Grisedale Horseshoe . “This race is traditionally run in thick mist, driving rain and gale force winds and this year didn’t disappoint.  Only a small Dark Peak turn-out, there’s usually more of us.”
Mike Robinson -   2nd  :Ryan Edwards – 13th : Janet McIver  -  32nd ( 2nd lady )
DT – a small turn-out, but so many good races this weekend, and the local Exterminator…

Blackshaw Head:- A good little race, 5.5ml, BS. It started in that first field of Calderdale Leg 4, then plenty of wet, rough moorland to the north, with a horrible uphill, wet, into the wind finish through the fields where Leg 4 sets off.

Great Longstone Results

Kilnsey Show. – this video is superb. Not often we see the front runner , running where we are walking. And the descent gully is as nasty as it looks – no exaggerations anywhere in this.

Arnison Crag. 29th August . “A great race, all part of the Patterdale Dog Show.  Slightly longer course than usual due to excessively high bracken.”   1st     Chris Waters        Ambleside         23.56
2nd    Mike Robinson                             24.42

Alpe d’Huez:- We’ve all watched it, a select few have biked up it, but has anyone previously run it?
Lynn is “Just back from cycling in the Alps.  Some of Norton wheelers joined me and Darrell for the last 2 weeks and we all took part in the Alpe d’Huez time trial.  While the rest of us did it on bikes Russ Beresford ran it!
“Has anyone else done the Alpe d’Huez time trial or is Russ Beresford’s time of 1hr 14mins a DP record?”
Russell France 2009 068

Langdale:- “ Does Anyone have a entry they will not be using? email
DT – Can anyone help over whether substitutions are viable? I’m thinking there may be a priority waiting list? I’ll sort out a decent map and Route Notes…
“substitutions are highly unlikely, any non-runners should inform the organiser to then use the waiting list…”

Mountain Trial - “ LDMT is in Eskdale this year and based at Eskdale YH, is there a plan for meeting up on a campsite or car sharing ?”
So if anyone can contribute, please get the Comments going, or email to Ian Winterburn.

English Championships after Dent

V45:-              Joe – 2nd : Steve – 3rd…..
V50:-              Steve Storey – 5== (with Geoff Briggs) . Mike – 7th (but only 3 races..)
V60:-              DT – 1st (but expecting to finally drop to 4th..)

Vets -            1st – need to win at Langdale.
V50’s  -          3rd, also must win at Langdale
