Weekend 31st October/1st November.

Fellrunner Magazine:- Carshare’s attention has been drawn to the remark onP61, that "people who inspire me to run is Andy Moore, because he runs a lot without his vest on and is awesome". But not a mention of those truly awesome tigerskin shorts? Will they be enhancing his appearances throughout next year, Carshare wonders?

Great Whernside:- it’s Yorkshire Championships – who let these Lancastrians in? The classic AS race, as good as they come. Damp through the midway bogs, but much better than the horrible Sunday downpour…results

Clwydian Hills:- Rhys was there:- "Grim weather early in the morning meant the route was shortened and made navigationally easier (pretty sure not an A category any more!), so a tinge of disappointment on the start line as the weather cleared fairly well in the end minus strong winds on the ridge. Anyway, a really good race in the end, with the lead changing hands between 6 or 7 runners regularly. Took the lead off the final summit to the bottom but couldn’t hold off a couple of runners on the last few hundred metres flat section. But a real good tussle all round. Only brown vest there, but familiar colours in Totley and Pennine present. A real motley crew of clubs in attendance from all over the place. Results –

Snowdonia Marathon:- John Hunt sends “After losing my partner for the OMM and not finding a replacement, I needed to put into action my fallback plan to "spend" all this high mileage training.  I went and did the Snowdonia Marathon on Saturday, for a road race it’s pretty full on and awesome.  Sorry as a road race I was wearing my road runners colours, first old man and 6th overall though.  Hard earned training well spent.”
DT – 2hrs 54 mins is right impressive, but slower than that bloke running up the Eiger North Face. Maybe John should have had axes and crampons?

OMM- Elan Valley .
Reports   Results (look in Maps and Timings).  With so many classes and all that, complicated for me to work out. Elite Class – Jon Morgan was 2nd, Oli and Rob Baker – 4th. John Coe was 5th in Class A. Any news etc most welcome. (If you’ve been missed off DP Results, please let us know…)

Three Classic North Faces. Have a look at this  video clip  . 2hr.47mins for the Eiger : 2hr.21 for the Grandes Jorasses . 1hr 56 for the Matterhorn….

Passing Clouds:- Results. “Passing Clouds was good for prizes – all the way to MV65 in 5 year groups, plus ladies, plus team (Dark Peak of course). “

Nicky in Faraway land. . “ Nicky is racing in the Grand Raid Reunion. This is a small island just East of Madagascar. AL 90 miles and 9,000m. It’s a bit like racing round the BG with 20 miles added on.
Race
website –
Nicky 2nd Vet Lady finish in a time of 33h49mn39s.
DT – that must be one of the best DPFR achievements of all time? Superb!

Withins Skyline:- not for me, still hurting from the FRA Relays slip. Never mind the Outer Edge Bog Monster, it’s friend, the Top Withens Slab Monster seems to have claimed some victims…(there’s a puddle between some paving slabs which conceals a nasty deep hole…)

Worksop Half Marathon…. results

Runfurther Vasque Ultra running championships . These results show that “ Mick Cochrane won the V60 category and Nicky Spinks finished second in the Ladies Open category. Also worth a mention, Julie Gardner recorded the most number of finishing points of all the Ladies, almost doubling her nearest rivals.” (thanks, Greg…)

Blackamoor Users :- Thanks to Lewis, for "Sheffield Wild Life Trust, who manage Blackamoor are conducting a user survey. I’m sure many of the members, who are more or less regular users of the area may wish to contribute.
DT – this link is worth looking through, lots of stuff about Blackamoor, and filling in the survey will surely be of help..

Pennine Bridleway – Jan 31st:- Lynn has “just had an e-mail to say that entries will be open for the Pennine Bridleway relay on Nov 1st.   I think this is a great event, it’s similar terrain to Calderdale but the logistics are a bit simpler, there are loads of prizes and a really good atmosphere with a big sports hall where it all starts and finishes with food and drink all day. It’s only 5 legs and there is a bit more daylight than at Calderdale so it doesn’t involve starting and finishing in the dark!”
So is anyone interested? “We need to get Calderdale over really before we start sorting out teams, just need to know what team categories to enter. “. If you’re keen, could put a team together, etc, please contact Lynn ycca or I can pass things along..

British Championship 2010 – Ireland. The Irish lads were talking about this at the relays. It’s AM, traditionally the excellent Donard/Commedagh, but a change next year. Still to be finalised, but maybe starting from the Silent Valley. This would be one of the most scenic race starts ever, rather like from an open Fairholmes, around the dam overflow. Must be a total classic…

FRA Relays – Ennerdale   Results and splits

Photos lots and lots – here are some…
United Kingdom Athletics Fell & Hill Relay Running Championships - 18th October 2009. United Kingdom Athletics Fell & Hill Relay Running Championships - 18th October 2009. United Kingdom Athletics Fell & Hill Relay Running Championships - 18th October 2009.
All 4 teams in the medals…Extremely difficult to see on the later three legs, all needing accurate navigation. Our Leg3 – it all seems so easy afterwards, studying the map carefully over breakfast. But ….teams coming from everywhere. Those who’d had a chance to look at their route benefitted greatly. A right good event, lots of work putting it all on, and CFR got it right in every way.
As for the disq’s – there can’t be many grumbles, as we need to visit every checkpoint. But compare this with Tebay, where the leading runners missed Rispa Pike, but the result stood…….There are many reasons for the two decisions taken, let’s just back the organisers and officials and move on.
The results show 39 teams as not finishing or being disqualified.
Video  of final Leg 4 descent, Mercia’s Tim Davies….

A big thanks to all the Team Organisers, never an easy task, and they’ve sorted it all out so very well.

V50’s Team:- Dave Allen put in a safe Leg 1, at least he could see the route. Then Keith and Mark round the long Leg2 good enough. Leg 3 navigation was hard, a distinct wobble on two of the CP’s, but perhaps we didn’t get as much lost as others. Paul Addison worked wonders, with no help from me, to get us round. Then a flying fastest Leg 4 from Steve Storey. Big thanks, Keith, for sorting everything out – and bringing home a medal. For some of us, at long, long last.

2010 – “Next year’s Relays should be on Oct 16th, in the Lomonds of Fife, based (I think) on the village of Falkland – venue for the long established Devils Burdens Relay.” – thanks, to Malcolm for this (Comments…).

Round Rotherham – results

Lakeland Classics:-  – updated after Three Shires, and confirmation that we’re 1stTeam, (Borrowdale couldn’t improve on their maximum score at Borrowdale Race..) Completions look to be:-
   Mike Robinson     -   5th                                                      Nicky Spinks              -           35th
   John Coe             -   7th                                                      Ashley Kay                -           36th

Some of these will change considerably when Langdale is added in…
Can we defend it next year?  Whatever happens, big Lakeland trips round…

Tour of Pendle:- Entry Form.  a while off, 21st November, but £5 pre-entry, £10.00 on day. We have our devotees for this race, and a genuine AL. Map – from Clayton website,

Weekend 10th/11th October 2009

Langdale – Loads of DPFR runners, a hard, wet and slippy trip round. Now all we have to do is defend that Lakeland Classics….

  2nd Seniors : 2nd Vets : 2nd V50’s.
an excellent V50 competition, congratulations to Clayton, one point ahead of us and Pennine. Extremely close throughout, we each had two wins,,,,

Beefy’s Nab:-
was a 3ml treat from Oxenhope. Runnable up the hill, along the top a bit, and shift back down through grass, reeds, tussocks, paths.

Old County Tops Results   – from ages back, distant May. Please let me know, similar to Grin and Bear It of last week, if you’ve been missed off.

Windgather – results

Hayfield Championships:- "The results for the Hayfield championships have been out a little while:  Steve Storey in 7th is the first Dark Peaker immediately followed by Ron Fawcett. Then Keith Holmes and Ian Winterburn coming in at 10 & 11."

Saturday, October 3rd, 2009

Ian Hodgson Relay:- Results with Splits. Ladies – 1st . Men – 3rd . Vets – 1st. Three very strong results, not too many clubs had the results in all three categories. Very good conditions, clear, only a bit slippy, and only occasional passing showers. Borrowdale Seniors held onto their reputation in this event, with a new record. Amongst such strength, 3rd was a good result. A new Men’s record, though we already held it…And an excellent Ladies Team….
Details will come from those more in the know. Many congratulations to everyone concerned.
(hopefully Totley’s Leg 3 pairing will remain untold…)

Hope Moors and Tors. results and here are some photos.and more also here.

Grin and Bear Itresults . Is Health and Safety kicking in, with extra precautions by the organisers? Fancy flagging the diversion around the Bog Monster’s Lair. Surely the nearby marshal could have had a winch at hand? Poor monster, he’ll be upset and lonely.
Extremely windy, but fortunately the rain held off, going across Outer Edge into driving rain would have been serious indeed. Not really too cold, just very hard effort across the wild and windy moors.
Woodhead MR put on a right good effort, in very difficult circumstances. Andy Beanland was first, then Mick Stenton. Other placings will await the results.
Mid next Week – These recent rains will have rejuvenated the Bog Monster, gearing up for the Watershed?

Lakeland Classics:- We’ve been second so many times, winning this is some huge achievement. Congratulations to everyone in any way involved. So are Borrowdale on the wane? (I’m not thinking so, though Pudsey have taken both Championships…). IH Relay result could be interesting, traditionally Borrowdale at their best.
I’ll look out for Lakeland Classic results…

Edale Skyline 2010 – Entry forms are on the Skyline link from the Homepage…

Rowbotham’s Round Rotherham International Trail Event

Friday, October 2nd, 2009

Can I commend the following event to fellow Dark Peakers?

It’s some years since we had a relay team in this because it used to clash with the Calderdale (I think) but now with a new date it has to be the event to do and win! The Relay is in 8 stages and is won in about 6 hours

The 2009 Rowbotham’s Round Rotherham International Trail Event of 80 km, 50 miles

an undulating route through the South Yorkshire Forest (The area designated as The South Yorkshire Forest is mainly rural land rather than a vast area of woodland)

on Saturday, 17th October, 2009 from Dearne Valley College

Starts: Walkers 6AM, Runners 7AM, Relay 8AM

The Round Rotherham is a qualifying event for the Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc®, can also be used as a qualifying event for the LDWA 100-mile event and is used as a training event for the Marathon de Sables

Bob Berzins and Alan Yates have completed ten events. Kev Saville attempted this event after a Firm’s Do & ~10 pints, Andy Forsyth won the event in 1986 in a time of 6 hours 38. This will be my tenth event

Good food, great support and varied terrain and scenery, surprisingly interesting and enjoyable! There are about 250 individual entries so far, no Relay info is displayed, but there were 20 teams in last year

There’s loads of information on here http://www.hmarston.co.uk/rhac/trail/rrr.htm
