Noonstone:-    results  I may well have missed off some runners from DPFR results, please help me out if that’s you….

Thanks to everyone for running, looks like 1st Seniors, 1st V40. Someone will have to work out V50’s and the Ladies….Right impressive to see two leaders coming up that last hill, both from DPFR.   Must have been very heavy across those middle moors. Good that, at long last, the Seniors didn’t need to depend on our Vets (Lloyd being a special case, of course).
A shame that substitutions weren’t allowed, but that was clearly laid down, and we must all be grateful to Todmorden – as usual – putting on an extremely efficient race. CONISTON – May 1st – a reminder that Entry Forms will be available to download from March 1st – this Monday.
Next is Ireland, hope we can get the teams over there…
   All Comments most welcome….
At long last I found that actual Noonstone – it’s a boulder, coming out of that last steep climb, before it rises more gradually, and should be in the background of some of their photos.

High Cup Nick –  tn A photo of reaching the Nick. Looks like Borrowdale were supporting this, rather than Noonstone…You not make it then, Ian?
   Phil did – 4th -  Phillip Winskill – 1hr 08.39 . Awaiting the full results….
Tuesday:- Sedbergh 3 Peaks

Ron Collier:- “We all know his books. Ron was a local guy from Glossop who wrote the Dark Peak Wrecks books. He also did a lot of fundraising for Glossop MR Team. I can’t find a link to it but this was copied from a local paper by a friend from Glossop.” – (I.W)
"A military historian who wrote books on the war planes which crashed on the Derbyshire moorland has died. Ron Collier, 74, from Glossop, was a leading authority on the aircraft which plunged from the skies over the Peak District and Longdendale. The first of his three books ‘Dark Peak Aircraft Wrecks’ was first published in the 1970s and has been a best seller ever since. Mr Collier spent years combing the wrecks of aircraft which crashed on the hills around Glossop during the second world war. He painstakingly researched their history, finding out where they were going to and from, plus the names of the crew and the details of the missions the aircraft had flown. Most of the stories were accompanied by photographs of the planes and the men who flew them. He took part in television features on the wrecks, particularly a programme about the American Super Fortress which crashed on Higher Shelf Stones more than 60 years ago, killing the entire crew. Mr Collier, who leaves a family, was also a huge supporter of Glossop Mountain Rescue Team. It was his family’s wish that donations at his recent funeral went to the team funds."

Hope Valley Adventure Film Festival
    Nick Wallis sends:-“
Sue and I have been super-busy organising a film festival  to be held at Hope Valley College on 27th Feb.  This is a fund raising event for the college.  (The lesson is don’t turn up to a PTFA meeting, and if you do then don’t come up with good ideas or raise your head when they ask for volunteers!  Its been a lot of work, but fun.) We have some great films and lectures, some ‘youth’ outdoor activities, mountain art exhibition, food and real ale from Hope Valley Brewery. Should be a good do, please come along either in the day (films etc) or the evening (Ian Parnell Lecture and beer).  And spread the word to anyone even remotely interested!  There’s a raffle with loads of ‘outdoor’ prizes as well. Check it out at the website

Haltwhistle Challenge  A request from the organiser:- “I wonder if you could add this to your events list?  It  is a 26 mile run/walk on May 8th. We have 100 places for runners and 200  places for walkers.  The route is a circular one from Haltwhistle. It  includes the Haltwhistle Burn, Cawfield Quarry, Caw Gap, part of the  Hadrian’s Wall trail to Greenhead, south via Kellah Moor to Lambley Viaduct  and return to town via the South  Tyne Valley. The Challenge is organised by the Haltwhistle Walking Festival. Full details  are available here. “

Ilkley Moor –  went ahead, but I didn’t get down the road for this, wouldn’t have been able to run it even had it been clear….

As part of his forthcoming?  world-wide lecture tour,  “ Ron is giving a book reading at the Sheffield Adventure Film Festival (SHAFF). The reading is Friday 12th March. 8pm in the showroom cafe. details. “
(and Carshare still has your 2009 V50 Team medal….)

Will he be doing a special signing for Brown vests at his next race after publication?”

Winter Monday Series   Next Monday – 22nd -  is the last race in the Winter Monday Series,  and we’d like a big turn out – self timed and low key. Bolsterstone at usual time….Prize giving will probably be the following week after a short fun handicap race. Details to follow.”

 Winter Hill. – results

The Best of the Fells:-  “The Best of the Fells is a collection of fell race accounts, written by runners, and featuring a wide range of races and challenges across the UK (and a few beyond). Read it for entertaining accounts of the Bob Graham Round, the Fellsman, classic Lake District fell races, the Ben Nevis Race, the Grizzly and many more. Thirty-five different running clubs and fifty runners have contributed to the book. All proceeds from the book are being donated to UK Mountain Rescue.”

UK Ultra Routes – this may be of interest to someone, details of anything long distance…..Listed are those who have completed the P. Buckley, BG, Ramsay …..

Carnethy 5 – results    a long way to go, and none of us up there…

Kendal Winter League:- Fairmile, Howgill, Sedbergh . results

Edale Skyline Carparking Marshalls:- :-  Greg Rimmer is “rallying troops to marshal the Car Parking for the Skyline, I think last year there were 6 of us and it ran quite smoothly. This year there are only two of us so far, which will mean mayhem and madness in and around Edale as people don’t park in the right places. It’s one of only a few opportunities you’ll ever get to both be a marshal and run an AL race! Last year at least three of us did the job then ran… This year it could be you! Please e-mail
DT – it’s straightforward helping out, and then running the race….

Cloud Nine – Sunday 7th March. The calendar mentions E.O.Day, but most likely to fill up, so best to save £1 and pre-enter…

Chew Valley Skyline – March 7th – the original course, which I’ve not done, is pre-entry…Can anyone please help with route notes? I’ve got the CP’s, but linking them up will be thoughtful, to say the least….

Silent Valley – Ireland. Well, here it is….We start at the very far end of that reservoir, do plenty of big climbs to the L of this picture, and this is the second part of the course. The steep pointed thing is Doan, that on the far right is Slieve Muck, then across to that one above the reservoir – Slievenaglogh. Big hills indeed , but the navigational handrail of the Mourne Wall will help considerably. Maps to come….

Going bare

Monday, February 8th, 2010

For such a natural activity, that has sustained man’s hunting and migration for millions of years, modern running seems to generate a lot of injuries.  There is a growing movement of  ‘barefoot runners’ who believe that the problem lies with shoes.  A recent  study demonstrated that greater forces are put through ankles, knees and hips when shoes are worn.  This is counter intuitive given the barrage of marketing claims of the ‘cushioning’ of modern running shoes, but the explanation would appear to lie in the heel striking before the forefoot.

Barefoot running isn’t always an option for soft feet on rough terrain and this has led to thin soled flexible light weight shoes- now where have I heard that before?  Methinks a man from Bolton has beaten them to it!

Weekend 6th/7th February

Monday, February 1st, 2010

Wadsworth Full and Half Trog.visibility nil…..In true miserly fashion most of us justified the entry fee by getting extra miles in. I only did the Half, the same difficulty as the Full was coming back from Cock Hill to Brown Knoll, and then to Sheepstones. Careful accurate compass work across the wastelands was needed….Very heavy going throughout, very tiring. A serious race for CVFR to promote, most successfully, and hot showers, loads of sandwiches, cake and drinks.
Half Trog Results    Full Trog Results (keep looking…)
   wtrog more photos   and here

Margery Hill. ???

Ben Nevis is now full…

Ireland 2010 – on-line entries  and details etc. I’ll sort out a map for anyone gradually, just need to regain my 1/25000 map ( after Noonstones.) This must be a real belter of a course, starting from the Silent Valley, (a lot like Fairholmes). The usual post-race meal is on offer, worth going to for the prize-giving. Might it be a buffet this year? But a decent snack beforehand may be needed as a top-up….

Titterstone Clee:- part of the South Shropshire weekend. A surprisingly hard AS race, and Steve Storey finishing 10th. results
Long Mynd Valleys
results.  Steve Storey and Phil Walters running….
Fell End Clouds – Kendal Winter League

Blackamoor:- “There is £25 000 up for grabs for the charity/good cause that gets the most votes, Blackamoor is one of those good causes but is trailing in the race for the money and needs your vote to get the paths sympathetically restored. Please use the link  to vote for Blackamoor, through the Wildlife Trust…
The Wildlife Trust for Sheffield and Rotherham urgently needs to undertake improvements to a key bridleway at Blacka Moor Nature Reserve creating a sympathetically constructed surface using local stone and with appropriate drainage. This will prevent further erosion and damage to the fragile woodland ground flora caused by visitor usage.”

Anniversary Waltz and Teenager with Altitude
   -  on-line entries  TWA has a limit of 75, (seventy-five..) so get on with it…

Sunday. Mickleden Straddle. – Cancelled. The organiser “ went round the course Sunday morn.and had serious doubts re the snow/ice field up Cutgate and associated hazards/risks.After much discussing we’ve decided to cancel this years race.I’m as disappointed as anybody but we just feel its too risky”
DT – there was no snow last year, but very frozen,. Didn’t someone crash going up Cutgate? And if there’s ice as well……

Charnwood Hills. Any of our distant southern runners doing this? It’s good, round the Leicestershire parkland…

English National Cross-Country – is at Leeds, but the same day as Noonstone…….Do Carshare’s spies hint that if our Seniors are out in new full strength, we could be looking for first team? And Ladies out depth, and lots of U23 runners. Tremendous!

Ilkley Moor – is a while off, Sunday 21st Feb. The Junior races are good, well thought out, and safe to have your own race afterwards. The AS course is hard, 5ml, 1260ft, all well marshalled, and worthy of Championship status, just an unavoidable bottleneck start. Being the week before Noonstone, might be worth a consideration. Then the delights of Ilkley – very good park by the river – or even Otley…
ilkley No prizes for knowing this Ilkley landmark…..
