Edale Skyline Helpers

Wednesday, March 24th, 2010

A message from Andy Jenkins:

Overall I think the Skyline went really well but as always there is room for improvement, so while it is fresh in everyone’s mind I think it would be a good idea to have a meeting to review it and come up with ways of improving the race for next year.
Unfortunately the only evening I am available soon is this Thursday evening, so the meeting is 7.15pm in The Travellers Rest at Brough.
If you intend coming please let me know- contact details below. If you can’t make it, you are welcome to email me your comments.

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

Coniston Entries:- Does anyone know if it’s actually full yet? I’ve put a S.A.E. with the entry and heard now’t. Jon Morgan, e-mail,  has “ been away doing 9 days ski racing in 3 weeks in the Alps , but, Ooops, have clearly missed the Coniston entries. Can I get a substitution if anyone drops out please? Didn’t do too well compared to the continentals, but did clock 88kmh on my GPS watch on one of the descents, so it felt exciting enough. Luckily home in one piece (there was the odd open fracture) so looking forward to the Skyline.”

FRA Chairman Allowances:- Carshare notices that there are definite advantages of being our FRA Chairman, as seen at the Windmills Whizz start…. Full results

Haworth Hobble/Wuthering Hike.  – results  . Can’t see any of DPFR there…. Apologies for once again missing out Julie Gardner, 102nd in 5:53:18 – going for the full set of 12 races again this year? This was the first race in that long, long set of things, Run Further. Their race report.

Grindleford Gallop –   results  . A smaller set of DPFR runners, maybe the attraction of Wolf’s Pit?

Wolf’s Pit  -  results.
Ian Roberts – results

Mystery Mike’s Gloves:- A kindly lady, Holly Rea, sendsI was out running on Stanage Moor a couple of weeks ago and I bumped into a  Dark Peak runner called Mike who lent me some gloves. Unfortunately I have  had no-one to pass them on to in order for him to get them back so I was  wondering if there is an address I can post them to so that I can get them  returned to him? e-mail
DT – so who’s this gallant gloveless runner, with cold fingers presumably?  Hopefully he can regain those gloves, and also reveal his identity?
All is revealed, our gloveless hero is Mike Browell..” I confess, it was me.  Blizzard on Higgar and met this cold lass who stroked my yellow dog and shivered so much I gave her my Buffalo mitts. Now cycle racing in South Africa at 40C!
gloveless of course”

Prominent Landmarks:-

jenny-twigg As not much seems to be happening, here’s the Nidderdale equivalent of our Noe Stool and the Woolpacks. This is “Jenny Twigg and her daughter Tib” – right in the middle of some lonesome moors.

Weekend 5th/6th March 2010

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

High Peak Marathon….The full results (complete with team details) .

Another Blog From Darren of Nun from Chinley( Ian Winterburn’s Team)

“DPFR newbie and ‘Fellrunner’ article writer Sarah Ridgeway describes here a night out with Russ, Kev and Steve on the HPM. Sarah describes Kev as ‘solid’, but I think she means it in a nice way.” – well spotted by Steve Matthews…

Rich Bradbury helps out with:- “HPM Dark Peakers not yet mentioned
16th      11:59      Team Pot Noodle                      included Mark Pearce and Roy Gibson
21st     12:19        Bland Leading Blind -               started as all DPFR and finished with 4 entirely different members including Steve Burgess and Andy Plummer.
22nd     12:21        Lost Lads and a Lass-            Philip Elliot, Dave Shepherd, Helen Elliot, Neil Drake  .
24th      12:27        Follicle Deficiency and Dave- Tim Ray, Ruth Batty, David Sugden, Simon Bacsich
26th     12:57        Lucy’s Lucky Lads-                   Richard Hakes, Ben Robson, Willy Kitchen, Lucy Wiegand
27th     13:15        Dark Peak Curmudgeons-     Jim Fulton, Dave Markham, Chris Barber, Kenny Turner

Regarding HPM history it’s a bit complicated – it did start at Yorkshire Bridge ( going clockwise) for the first few events but soon moved to Edale. The record was set in 1988 by Martin Stone and co. In 8:07.  Then in 1996 the National Park and Nat Trust  got involved and we had to beg to be allowed to run the proper course but only every other year.  In 2002 The Rolling Stones (Simon Bourne, Alan Ward, Marcus Scotney, Richard Patton)  ran the full course in the 2nd best time  of  8:39. In 2004 we managed to negotiate a new route that we could do every year going via Lost Lad and Sheepfold Clough.  It was also adjusted in 2005 to go via Cutthroat Bridge.  Last year was a very quick year with record times for the new route in all classes.   8:48 for the men .  Dark peak Ladies set the best all female time of 10:42.   Nicky Spinks’ Blind Mice have now gone better still this year  and lowered their own record to sub 10hrs- 9:59..
If anyone has results from 2000 and any pre-1992 it would be good to have a full set of all 36 events.

John Hunt “spotted plenty of DPFR in many different teams Friday night before the kick off.  Fantastic conditions loads of snow to wander through, once past Moscar the snow really started to dominate the view and make for some great night scenes. I don’t know any results other than DPFR had one runner in the winning team and we got round in 8hours 58minutes and 45 seconds.  Stephen Watts, Tom Brunt,  Stephen Pyke and myself.  The record for this course ( 8:07:00 ) has got to be one of the most tantalising do able long race records.”

Callum sends:- “Some more Dark Peak (in bold; feel free to correct any I missed) . Not sure about the rest of the field yet but the prelim results are here:
1st (1st Vet) 08:58:12 = Flipper’s Gang                                     [Stephen Watts, Stephen Pyke, Tom Brunt, John Hunt]
3rd (3rd Vet) 09:37:13 = Nuns From Chinley                            [Ian Winterburn, Darran Holloway, Adam Perry, Mick Stenton]
4th (1st Mix) 09:59:14 = 3 Blind Mice And A Farmer’s Wife   [Nicky Spinks, John Rowe, Ian Charlesworth, Nick Cable]
1st Ladies (12th) 11:35:11 = Dark Peak Ladies Accelerate   [Kirsty Bryan-Jones, Rachel Horn, Julia Nolan, Alice Robson]

“The team in 7th place (Mahogany Ridge Fell Runners) was a DPFR team- Steve Mathews, Russell Beresford, Kev Saville and Sarah Ridgway (Sarah is 2nd claim with us) . I reckon this makes us the first DPFR team for the 3rd year running.”

“Team Rach, 2nd ladies team and 29th overall also had a DPFR member, Jo Armistead who was running with Rachel Findlay-Robinson, Rachell Botterill and Kate Cheesewright.”

“Great weather conditions, underfoot conditions variable, some great times posted – Loads of Dark Peakers out and about! “ – Steve Matthews.

Full results to follow, hopefully early this week.

Also, for anyone interested, JH is right about the course record getting close, although the time of 08:07 stands from when the race started (and finished) at Yorkshire Bridge, and there have been a few route changes since then… I think the record for the current route is probably 08:39, set in 2002 by the High Peak Rollerbladers, but I’d have to confirm that.  The fastest ever time for the HPM is actually 06:26 by Sub 9, 2 years before their record of 08:07,
but this was due to following bad weather routes. Hopefully some more of the event history will be going up on the website before next year.”

Driving home tired?  Have a look at this  , Sir Ranulph Fiennes, having completed the HPM, “Team – Poles Apart – took Rucksack Trophy again – a couple of hours slower than our time of last year.”, was in a car accident in Stockport afterwards. One of the different advantages of carsharing is having passengers to keep me awake on a long drive home…
DT – please help out if you’re in one of the other teams and not got a mention…

Winter Mondays:- Tonight is the last run of Winter Mondays. The postponed winter handicap fun race. prize giving in Castle(Bolsterstone) afterwards.

Pendle Half Tour:- results

Chew Valley Skyline:-   results  .I should have mentioned  that “Julie Gardner was second lady at the Chew Valley Skyline”

Black Combe:- results  . Mike – 12th (with Rob Jebb – 1st ) : Steve Storey 21st : Lewis Ashton – 75th.
Cloud Nine:-  – results  “Lloyd and Dave Aucott out front. Myself, (Martin Stocks) , Andy Moore and Jon Heathfield travelled over together.  I got away from Andy on the climb and managed to hold him off as he came back at me at
the end.  Think I was 46th and Andy just inside first 50.  Big race, lovely weather.”
After some corrections, DPFR are 2nd Team.

Teams after Noonstone.
     Senior Ladies – 9th : V40 Ladies – 2nd : Senior Men – 1st : V40 Men – 1st : V50 Men – 5th. A very good start, lots to go for. I should have given more praise to Liz Batt – 3rd in the Lv40 and LV45, and also to Liz Britton – 2nd LU23….

The Sandman strikes?

Monday, March 8th, 2010

One of the hazards of endurance events that does not receive all the attention it should is driving home.

Sir Ranulph Fiennes having completed Saturdays High Peak Marathon in a respectable 12hours 22 minutes, which would have seen him back in Edale about 12pm, was involved in an accident about 2 hours later at 2pm  when, according to news reports, he crossed to the opposite side of the road colliding with two other cars.  Thankfully there were no serious injuries.

Ron’s book signing/talk

Monday, March 8th, 2010

A few of us went to the first venue on Ron Fawcett’s book signing tour, at the Climbing Works last night (Sunday). An entertaining evening, taking the form of a discussion between Ron and Ed Douglas, with a lot of spectacular photos (and with free beer): apparently the books went well and Ron signed a load of them. My main reason for posting, however, is to say that Ron’s just phoned to thank all the Dark Peakers who turned out, I think there were over half a dozen of us. I know there will be some more this Wednesday at Outside, so it’s good to see the support.

Wed 10th Warts run

Monday, March 8th, 2010

Andy Harmer is intending running from Strines this week, as he is going to miss the scheduled run from there next week. Join him for a 6.45 start if you fancy it.
