Lakeland 50/100  Paul Fauset “Did the Lakeland 50 at the weekend – with I think a reasonable 59th out of c300 (a lot higher up the rankings than the Duddon! Maybe its a different crowd?) .  Jon Morgan, was 2nd – incredible! We had a  Jon Vernon in the 100 too.Anyway, it was a great event, very well organised, checkpoints full of nice cakes and stew – I’d recommend it.l”

Carshare’s Football Correspondent surfaces again, this time with the left-footed/right footed penalty kick, here.

FRA Relays – Falkland, Fife. There’s every likelihood of us having all 5 Teams out, and with only 6 places for each team, selection will be difficult. Shelf Moor –that vital last Championship race, is the ideal place to put forwards your claim for selection….
Shelf Moor – ”
Looking at the entries there are now less than 50 places available. We need a big turn out ,as even if we don’t score points we will prevent others from scoring.”All points completely vital…"

English Championships after Holme Moss

July 21st, 2010

Lakeland Classics – after WasdaleJohn Hunt is leading, followed closely by Rhys (3rd) and Mike (4th).  Nicky, Lloyd, Dicky and Greg have also completed the series requirements, several others having done the two Superlongs (but alas, not Carshare…)

Blisco Dash :  “Blisco Dash last night, weather cleared up to a beautiful Lakes evening though very wet underfoot. Various lines taken though no-one visited Little Langdale this year as far as I know! 3 DkPk there, Rhys won (!) in 41.12, Mike 5th, Will Spain around 20th.” results

Holme Moss. English Championship. – results  Oops and apologies, I’d missed Greg off the sticky labels, soon to be sorted…
Senior Men – 2nd – Pudsey well ahead with 5 high counters. Still 1st, but we have to beat Pudsey at Shelf Moor…
Ladies : 2nd, behind Todmorden, but 1st Yorkshire Team. Congratulations indeed to them, but where are our non-Vet Lady runners? I make us still 1st, one point ahead of Keswick…
V40 Men – 1st : Still 1st, but we also need to win at Shelf Moor, ahead of Borrowdale – though countback may come to our aid….
   V40 Ladies – 1st and 1st overall in the Championships ;
V50 Men – 2nd. One last effort at Shelf Moor will give us 3rd overall….
Wet and windy setting off, but the day fared up, becoming very pleasant at the presentations. The heavy, typical Peak running seems to have come as a surprise to many visitors…
What a superb job, every year, the organiser does. Loads and loads of prizes, loads of food, a race put on by someone who knows what runners want from a race.
(those steep climbs out of Ramsden Clough are easy if you sit down and eat the bilberries…)

FRA Relays – SUNDAY – 17th October. These are in Fife, the other side of the Alva/Dollar hills. To be precise, it’s Falkland, but not too far off. Probably from the hilltop we could watch the St Andrews Golf thing….160 Teams accepted, and 5 teams from each club, so we can potentially have Senior Men, Senior Ladies, MV40, LV40, MV50. Entries will be taken in August. 6 first-claim runners per team.
ASAP – please contact Team Captains if you are wanting to run, there’s no sense in putting a Team in, and last minute finding out that people won’t travel.
Senior Men – Rob Little “
will be selecting the team for relays this year. Provided our IoM resident can make it, there will be at least one MV40 in the team. If you would like to run at all please do get in contact with me. e-mail   .Its always good to have too few than not enough!”
Ladies: – Kirsty and Lynn will  be sorting things out, hoping to get the two Teams out.

Dark Peak Wedding Present:- From Nicky’s website:- “ Its a year since we were given the wedding present by our DPFR friends,  of funds to buy ourselves a new bull. But as we already have a perfectly good one (Adam) we planned to get him a couple more girlfriends (heifers) instead. Last year we missed the boat mainly due to organising the wedding – by August all the calves had gone. BUT  we have purchased two heifer Limousin calves.

Bamford
Black Rocks
results. “ As seems to be usual for this race of late the weather was threatening, with thunder claps in the distance.  Graham Moffatt was out front early with the 14/15 year old rising star Kristian Edwards of Tamworth in hot pursuit.  I was trying hard to keep in contact with Christine Howard of Matlock in the top 10.  Mark Salkild and I hit the climb up the HIgh Peak Trail together and remained in close contact about 20m behind Christine.  By the Trig, Graham had established a clear lead of about 30 seconds and I was in 9th behind a group of 3 including Christine.  The descent was fast, though fairly good under-foot despite recent rain.  A couple of runners passed me on through the woods and Mark caught me on the canal towpath.  Chris Howard ended up an impressive 7th overall.” – thanks to Martin Stocks.

Wasdale:- Full Results. Greg helps out with:- (any more news from other participants?)
1. Ben Abdelnoor
2. John Hunt
6. Matt Hulley
7. Mick Robinson
8.Rhys Findlay-Robinson
Nicky First lady vet 40, Ashley Kay 3rd V50. “That gives us 1st Team, and congratulations to all – The Lakeland Classics.

Alan Brentnall helps out with:- ““The Wasdale race was very gnarly yesterday. Although it was warm and dry down in New Mills, in the Lakes, on the other side of the front, we had  rain, high winds and zero visibility for the whole day – not exactly what you want for a 22 mile race in complex geography! The winner’s time was over an hour outside Billy Bland’s record, and there were literally scores of drop-outs, with extremely slippery rock surfaces and high winds taking their toll. Afterwards there were great tales of folk descending from Scafell Pike into Piers Gill by mistake, visiting Pillar checkpoint twice and ascending to the Beck Head col only to find that it was Windy Gap … but I’m sure that these were only amusing in retrospect, not at the time! For myself, I was very happy just to finish without getting lost – picking up the prize for first in my age category was an added bonus! I think most of the codgers were resting in preparation for Holme Moss”.

Borrowdale Entries:- Substitutions are accepted, usually on the day. Rhys now has John Coe’s entry…
Thurlstone Chase  – results
Charlesworth and Chisworth  – results

Broomhead Chase – results . “
A super fast blast around this short classic. It was quite warm in the valley but a refreshing breeze on top cooled you down before plummeting back down the valley for that last terrible 500m up hill to the finish.
Shaun Dimelow was well clear but missed the turning after some one removed the markers allowing the second place runner to take the spoils.”
DT – ages back something similar happened, and Jo Smith was placed first. She’s now mum to newly born Bethan, as well as Katie.

Knaresborough Bed Race:-  This was in June, the Yorkshire equivalent to the Kinder Beer Barrel race.  Highly competitive and cut-throat at the front end, with the crossing of the river Nidd. It featured on Sunday Songs of Praise –Jones  bed30.jpg picture by gog40

Wharfedale TTT –  results. This is a good AM – 12.5miles !!!! — fell course, from Kettlewell. Low-key, a smaller field, so soon spread out and a need to find your own way round. Plenty of rough unpathed stuff , needing care to climb back up to Great Whernside from the far side, and to find the way home. A team of 4 this year, and if it’s a quiet weekend in the Peak, well worth travelling.

Osmotherley Phoenix:- Another of these long Ultra Series events. Results.  This one around the N Y Moors. Carshare’s spies report that Nicky (around 5h 20m) took 20 minutes of her previous best!, and that Mick Cochrane had a very good run. Indeed, Nicky is 1st Lady, and Mick – 1st V60.

Chevy Chase – results.
Only the two Dark Peakers there, with a small but effective Eryri contingent to swell the local ranks. Math Roberts of Eryri first home, having tracked John Boyle for most of the route, and running down NFR man Paul Sanderson on the road to the finish.”

Congratulations to “Dave Sykes and Ben Robson did a self supported BG Saturday, starting 3am and clockwise. “
“In the absence of a long lake district race this weekend Ben Robson and I completed an unsupported BG round leaving the Moot Hall at 3am. The weather was fine but very windy. Ben proved the BG is really a very big walk by not running after the Fairfield descent until time pressure dictated a last 2 km jog. It went dark on Brandreth and my torch gave out soon after. We finished in 23h 52.”

Skiddawresults  . Only Callum there, but with a very high placing of 4th.

Cliffhanger  – results.

Relays:-
    Ian Hodgson:-
Lynn has “just put in our entry for Ian Hodgson Relay.  Asked for usual Senior Men, Senior Ladies, M Vets.  Limited to 60 teams this year so we’ll have to see what happens.”
FRA Relays:-  Details are due in the imminent Fellrunner. They’re being held in Fife, just round the hill from Dollar. As yet we don’t know the categories, but Senior Men, Senior Ladies and M Vets would seem essential. It might well be worth groups asking around amongst themselves to see if there’s enough travelling support to justify asking for a Ladies Vet Team, (their Championship performances this year have been so strong) and would enough MV50’s travel, if we were able to enter a Team?
Calderdale:- Eventually it would be Senior Men, Senior Ladies, M Vets – and hopefully once again the “B” Team – Willy has kindly offered to organise our “B” Team, and there’s every reason for it to be a good one.

Both Championships after Sedbergh

July 2nd, 2010

These positions are still provisional……

Dollar , up in Scotland, is next British, EOD, though it does double up with Ireland. And then the Black Mountains, of which I know nothing. Can anyone help with Route Notes?
For the English, we’ve got Holme Moss and Shelf Moor, and inevitably the other clubs will be out in force. So important are those runners who don’t score, but who can help to push the other clubs further back…

Provisional English Positions.

Senior Ladies :-            Liz – 7th
   V40 Ladies:-                 Liz – 2nd, Nicky – 8th= , Pippa – 10th

Ladies Senior Team:-    1st – Keswick and Calder Valley extremely close…
Ladies V40 Team:-        1st – and with three wins + a 2nd, should be settled as winners!
Senior Men’s Team:-     1st  – BUT – Pudsey will come strong and if they win the last two races….., and there’s Borrowdale, of course. We need to win One More…
1st V40 Men’s Team –   1st  – BUT -  Borrowdale are nearby, inevitably….
V50 Team –                   3rd

Provisional British Positions.
Senior Ladies :-               Judith – 7th,  Liz – 10th

Summer Series (7)  – results

Sedbergh 3 Peaks -  English Championship (4) – British Championship (2). 2nd Seniors and 3rd V40, it seems.  As hot as they come, but thankfully only a short race, and a very good, hard one at that. sensibly the stringent kit requirements were relaxed, many runners going round without a top on. Results weren’t available, but from the prize giving  –Tim Davies won,  Stuart was 4th, Matt Speake – 5th, Lloyd-8th. We were given first Team, but this may only be for three runners. Five are needed for the Championships, and this will be have gone to  Pudsey,  hopefully with us2nd .
Lloyd was 1st V40, but Borrowdale will most likely have taken the Team points.
The Vet Ladies superbly propped up the Ladies Team, no Senior ladies???   Eryri were given the Team prize, but being Welsh, ineligible for English Championships, so our 2nd place today goes well.  No need to worry about the Vets Team – Judith was 1st V40, Pippa 2nd, and Liz – 1st V45, tremendous results.
Keith, Roy and Dicky got the points for the V50, no idea how that fared…though it may be 4th Team.
image More photos.Leaving two races to go in the English – both on home peat.
Winder Grind:- This was a Championship race in 1997, run in similar hot conditions. An awful race which has never been repeated, thankfully. It was the same ascent of Winder, off the end going to Arant Haw the same, but at that little col, we broke back down right to that farm gate on the outrun. Then repeated it twice more to make three laps. The third climb of Winder was a right hot, wobbly affair. I was first from DPFR, 56th out of 114 – how our standard and participation has improved. Andy Dickenson was 65th, Pete Dyke – 89th, Colin Henson – 91st. No team points and no Ladies. But also running were Joe – - 16th, John Hunt – 29th, and many other stalwarts still running yesterday…

Pendle Cycle Fest:-  Martin Stocks did this nearly 100mile thing on Saturday, have a read of his report, here  .  And a reminder that anything goes onto Carshare, whatever you’ve been up to – there’s much more happening than fell running..
- Our friends in Clayton help out with “ It was a really well organised enjoyable event – 95 miles on the Garmin, with about 10,000′ of climb! It’s a bit off-putting when you’ve done nearly 90 miles & you’re just starting to cycle up to the Nick of Pendle, knowing that there are 2 nasty sharp climbs after that! I eventually crawled over the line in 7 hours 40 mins – very satisfied to have finished without getting off to walk.”

Great Lakes Run:-
results.   DSCF0695 One of Martin Stock’s photos, others on DPFR photos. This is approaching the  col off Little Stand, looking back to Slight Side and the Scafells. Look out for this race next year….

A right classic if ever there is one, 13ml, 7000ft. Langdale, over both Scafells, round the back and home over Blisco.
A superb trip round, as good as it gets. Hopefully Martin’s photos to come. Clear, cool, dry. Considering other happenings, a very good turnout from our Lakeland Specialists – which was noticed and remarked upon -  – Mike (4th) : Matt (5th) : Jon Coe (7th) : Gavin (8th) : Dave Sykes (9th) :  Jenny Caddick – 1st Lady.
Round to Scafell is the more straightforward part, then finding the way off Slight Side invites errors, as does wandering across to the Little Stand col. Leaving a final descent off Blisco which us visitors tended to mess up considerably.
£5.00 entry, loads of cake and sandwiches at the end – every compliment to the organisers…

Hunshelf Amble :- “Hunshelf Amble is a low key affair, deep in the heart of PFPR territory. The views from registration north and east across to the Trent valley were worth the trip in themselves. The running was on footpaths and tracks round the Hunshelf Parish boundary – well marked and marshalled at all the critical points. The perennial debate of how to award prizes was stoked by the organisers, but none should feel hard done by given the quality and quantity of the prizes. For those few without prizes, the tea and scones in the cricket pavilion went down a treat.” –( Lewis )

Sutton Pinnacles – results. image Here’s a poser for you…Where’s this then? Has Carshare got the traditional prize of Jaffa Cakes safe in the cupboard?
No chance – Willy must know these parts well… as does Greg. It’s one of the towers above Earl Crag, a class place to be running, along to the next tower, then over to the Hitching Stone, one of these rocks of myths and legends, like the Eagle Stone above Baslow. Well worth a family walk if ever you’re up this way.

Shelf Moor Entry Form. The other short English Championship race – on our doorstep…..Nicky has noticed that “The entry form is now up – entries "not processed till July 1st" but means we can still get our entries off.”

BG Weekend – best wishes from Carshare to everyone involved – and now congratulations!

Wasdale Entry List – filling up steadily….

Gagging 4 reform?

June 23rd, 2010

With tax rises, spending cuts and deficits the new government would seem to have far more immediate concerns than reforming the libel law there is an increasingly strong  lobby that reform is vital if we are have an open and democratic society. English libel law is expensive, complex and very difficult to defend against.

Recent cases have brought the issue closer to home for me.  In 2007 Dr Henrik Thomsen, a Danish radiologist, raised concerns about the safety of a drug used in MR scanning at a conference in Oxford.  Rather than entering a scientific debate over the matter the manufacturer, General Electric, brought a libel case against him.  This is far from unique, a more widely publicised case arose in 2008 when Simon Singh of the Guardian  was sued by the British Chiropractic Association when he attacked claims to treat colic, ear infections and asthma in children with spinal manipulations.

Though both cases have been dropped  libel law threatens to stifle scientific debate
