Week from 31st March/1st April 2012

Carshare is now back, sorting out, etc. Zurich isn’t cheap….

A  request from David Brindley: "Hi fellow DPFRs .I am looking to find some running buddies for Sunday morning long runs (3 to 4 hours). I live in Tideswell but will travel anywhere within 30 minutes to have join someone or a group. Please let me know if you can help by email or on mobile 07767 886045
Thank-you, David"

Calderdale Relay:- is Sunday, 13th May. Held previously in December, we’d put out strong teams. This year on the same weekend there is Ireland (British Championships). Cressbrook and Mt Famine – nearer to home. Also the classic Fairfield. If you want team(s) entering, speak out – and maybe you’ll need to be organising something. Carshare would prefer to be on Fairfield Horseshoe, rather than Wainstalls.

Causey Pike. – results.
Exe to Axe – doesn’t someone usually do this? Yes, this year it’s Dave Sykes. “I did the Exe to Axe race on Sunday along the SW coastal path – lots of flat running with the odd up and down. For me, with all that running it was quite a hard race, but I finished 47th in 3:41:33. I’ll try and do it next year if it doesn’t clash with anything but I’ll not be wearing fell shoes again – 2 miles along Budleigh Salterton promenade in X talons was not much fun.” Results.

Mow Cop. – results.
Monday- Back Tor and Beyond.
The start of these excellent Summer Series races.

Weekend 24th/25th March 2012

Edale Skyline.

Blakey Blitz.Carshare had a plod around this, never done it, from the Lion Inn, somewhere in the middle of the N Y Moors. 10ml, 2600ft. This was one of the better N Y Moors courses. A big downhill start, so not hard to work out what the finish was like. Three hard climbs on the race, and with good weather, a lovely place to be running. Like everywhere, very dry peat. The visit to Great Fryup Dale never provided the hoped for bacon butties, sadly.
BUT – guess who finished a very strong 4th? No, not Carshare…as if….
Yes, a rejuvenated Joe Blackett, running well, strong and getting it back together after injury. Results

Wirksworth Incline. – results.

Monday – Trunce (1) Trunce Travelling. Nigel Jeff and Sue Kirkbride are” hoping to complete all of the Trunce series. We live in Bamford and have spaces for 2 in our car. Please e-mail

The Market Horse is saved.  Now for the important things – a local beneficiary has provided the money to save Chesterfield’s celebrity Market Horse.

Weekend 17th/18th March 2012

Lad’s Leap. English Championship (1).  Men’s Results.   Ladies Results
First Men’s Team Prize : 3rd MV40 : 2nd MV50 :
Firstly – an excellent organised event, so enormous credit to the willingness and enthusiasm of Des to stage the event. No problem with parking (for us, at least.) I’d feared walking from Torside. A much better start than when it was last Championship, no trouble getting away up that lane.Weather was alright, no rain, a vest was alright. Very heavy going in places, but that’s Peak running. Going across through the peaty heather was bad, and those pipes didn’t help, but plenty of time to grind hard up the quarry path, and back across to the flying descent.

A very strong set of DPFR Senior Men runners…..out in force.

If you know any omissions from results, or placings, or teams,  please send through.

Simon Bailey was first : Lloyd – 3rd and first Vet; Helen was first LVet : Mick was first V50 : DT was 2nd V65, followed closely by Mick Cochrane, 4th V65.
Next is Coledale, English and British. I’m hoping to trot round sometime, it’s not hard to navigate, but the line off Barrow seems to be important.

Heptonstallresults. Several runners doubling up after Lad’s Leap – including Dicky Wilkinson.

Dark & White MM (1) – Macclesfield Forest. – results.

Fiendsdale – Jon Coe helps out with:-
"3 brown vests decided to be different and headed to Bowland and the Fiendsdale race, where for some reason (?) the field was slightly reduced. For those who haven’t done this, it’s an excellent and tough route, reminiscent of our club races round Howden and Alport, and feeling more than its 6.5miles 2200′. Pleasantly low-key and with a fine selection of cakes, we’ll definitely be returning."
DT – if you’re not going to contribute to the team in Championship, every reason to spread elsewhere….

Langdale:- A long way off, but it’s the same weekend as the FRA Relays, and only one week after the Ian Hodgson…

Heather Moorland Management  . Worth a read, from the Guardian. Whether the heather moors should be banned from their usual burning, for land management. This case refers to land on Wadsworth Trog.

Weekend 10th/11th March 2012

Haworth Hobble  – results.
Windmills Whizzresults.
Wolf’s Pit  Dicky Wilkinson sends:- “ At Wolf’s Pit race yesterday Nottinghamshire AAA held their fell running championships and the following were Dark Peak entrants:
9th Dicky Wilkinson V50 Gold
20th Trevor Milner V50 Bronze
32nd Phil Walters
Together these 3 finished as 4th team as DPFR.”
 Full results.

Grindleford Gallopresults. Oops! I’d missed this…

Adventure Film Festival  is “this coming weekend with various running related films/talks on Fri and Sat and lots of outdoor films all weekend. In conjunction with it on Saturday March 10th South Yorkshire Orienteers are putting on some orienteering in conjunction with the Sheffield Adventure Film Festival. Oli has made a brand new map of the new South Street park including part of the Park Hill Estate and Victoria Quays with courses suitable for kids, families and beginners through to elites.
More info available online: urban-orienteering or South Yorkshire Orienteers and Facebook

And Results are here.

Paul Fauset – Comments – “I went to see the winning feature film last night – Unbreakable – about the 2010 Western States 100 ultra. A fantastic film that really crescendos as the finish approaches. Anyway, as it’s won they’ve decided to show it again on Sunday neet.”

Weekend 3rd/4th March 2012

Black Combe. On the start line ( a new improved road start, rather than that mad dash up the fields to that narrow gate) it was hot, sunny, near the top of Black Combe it got colder a bit. Those young fastun’s , including Mick and Gavin, saw the impending storm and scurried down to the valley bottom , with the protected climb back up. For us others, the hail lashed across, as we were heading for White Combe. Stinging, hurting hail. Runners sat down, out came leggings, tops, hat and gloves, and the warmth came back again. Of course the sun later came out all the way home.
A very strong field, and especially good to see so many Dark Peakers realising the importance of getting that first Lakeland hill in the legs. Rob Jebb was first, ahead of Carl Bell who, by 2 minutes, managed the fastest final descent. Mick and Gavin deprived other hopefuls of the V50 prizes. A welcome visit from Clare Oliffe, and hopefully more Ladies on the starting lines?
As for kit, this was the perfect example of why we take it. Hot and sunny at the bottom, potential dangerous exposure up top. Full body cover goes in the bag to every race, now’t more to be said. Results
13156394184f53b5839c8688.13941904On that final descent…..

Cloud Nine. Results. Another of these huge fields, 406 runners.

Lad’s Leap. A mention was made (at Silecroft) of nesting birds, maybe on that part between the top path and the loop circuit, so we may???  be flagged over nearby rough stuff, rather than the path. Men’s Entry List.   Ladies Entry List

Weekend 25th/26th February 2012

New Chew – Nicky sends – “Steve and I had a nice trot round Long Score in the mist and came a very pleasing 8th overall, 1st Mixed team. Tim Martin apparently lost more points (-93) than Steve Martin totalled and still came a very creditable 3rd in LS. Maurice Musson, Steve M and John Dalton were comparing their lines off the map to Glossop – tales that definitely need more investigation and publicity (actually John stayed on the map, but for far too long, and managed a record breaking -104 for being late back, leaving an overall score of 6!) I also saw Glen Borrell who came I think about 10th in Long Score. A great day out – very challenging ground without the mist and a navigators dream in the mist !!! Excellent event with loads of food and prizes.”
Results – if you look hard enough…

High Cup Nick. Above Dufton, and most definitely a good place to be running. Clear, dry and chilly, but  good running conditions.
Very much like Kinder Downfall, and also on the Pennine Way. Rhys was 2nd, just behind Carl Bell. Helen excelled as 1st Lady everything, and Carshare didn’t tweak any worries, so pleased with that. Many thanks to Ian for the A1 pick-up.

Radcliffe 10 mile multi terrain race. Austin Frost “went over to Manchester this weekend & ran in colours doing this, coming in 18th out of 261 in 1hr 3min 1sec. 2nd time I’ve run this race with my Manchester friends. “

Team Townend Pushbike Challenge. This has come from Andy Beanland. “This is about a cyclosportive I’m involved with. Was wondering if you could add the details to the Dark Peak website as know there are quite a few keen cyclist in the club.
It’s on 28th April 2012, based at Loweswater near Cockermouth and is in memory of two brothers, both good friends of mine, who died in a cycling accident in December 2010. Any funds raised from the event go directly to Road Peace who campaign for road safety and support road crash victims. Might be good for any brown vest training for the Fred Whitton or other cycling events. More details plus online entry are here..”

Bleasdale Circle and Ilkley – any visitors?

The not-a mystery competition

Country Diary : Buttermere famous Scots pinesLovely scenic woodland – and it’s those trees at the top of Buttermere. Worth a read here about Scarth Gap (from the Guardian’s Country Diary). “It’s very much in contrast to memories of last year’s Ennerdale race passing through the gap in searing heat.”

Weekend 11th/12th February 2012

Congratulations! – to Mum and Lewis, andAlexander – ( Ashton ) arrived Saturday  at 7.51 am. 3.99kg. It was a marathon and not a sprint, so both Mother and Baby were exhausted by the endeavour. Both looking perkier this evening after some rest, food and tender care from our wonderful National Health Service.”
