Wed 17th Feb 2016 6:45pmDPFR raceRivelin Landmarks

Time once again to run around in circles in the dark, half strangled by brambles, wondering why we bother ... again, and again, and again. Perhaps it's because there's nothing quite so silly as the Landmarks race? Classic Dark Peak. Honest. Full FRA kit and mobile phone recommended. I'd like to think a map would help too, but that's rarely been my experience in the last few years. Checkpoints, such as they are, available from the route link.

Wed 24th Feb 2016 6:45pmDPFR raceMam Tor

Getting in on the act for the 40 at 40, Big Bob (RO) has usurped the scheduled Warts outing from Odin's Mine road end by calling a repeat running of the decidedly precipitous race to the summit of Mam Tor and back, first run in 1992. Full FRA kit to be on the safe side, and since the previous winning time is recorded at a touch under thirteen minutes, we should still have time for a decent warm down Wart over Winnats Pass way, or thereabouts, once the race is run.

Starting this year at the earlier time of 9.30am, to enable the very keen to race in the morning then get up to Dufton for the Carshare League counter at High Cup Nick in the afternoon. Starts from the 'rather scratty ... now dead' sycamore roughly to the north and below the path down from the bend in Long Lane. Two swiftish laps of a flour/soot marked circuit. Parking on Long Lane (bottom of Hagg Lane and Stephen Hill). Cobden View in Crookes afterwards for beer and prize giving. Simon Bacsich RO, with a little assistance from club chaplain Father Yates.

Summer's here again ... or on its way at least. To celebrate, we'll no doubt be blundering towards Little John's Grave via North Lees Pond, notwithstanding Roy and Tim's protestations that it's too early in the season for such a long distance venture. Bring your head torch, and be prepared for the party to fragment on the climb back up to Stanage, where anything is possible. Always good to reacquaint ourselves with absent friends - roadies and warts alike.

Sat 2nd Apr 2016 11:00amDPFR raceThree Cabins Champagne Challenge

RO Simon Bacsich. Meet Birchin Clough Bridge car park. Start/Finish in the car park; CP1 Oyster Clough Cabin SK117914; CP2 Waterfall at foot of Glethering Clough SK122932; CP3 Upper North Grain Cabin SK103934; CP4 Ashop Cabin SK090906. Must touch wall of each cabin and get feet wet in the waterfall. In the spirit of health & safety gone mad, and the hope that the hour challenge mark might finally be bettered (for which a bottle of champagne is on offer), Simon has declared the underpass below Snake Rd at the foot of Upper North Grain out of bounds. Instead, you can cross the Snake Road - with appropriate caution - via whichever you deem to be the 'optimum line'.

Resurrected by popular request of - and organisation by - Lewis 'the Cat' Ashton, and Glen 'the Brick' Borrell (chiefly, some may surmise, to redraw attention to one of the Calendar's finer navigational moments from the archives).

Meet at Birchin Clough lay-by on Snake in good time for early (9am) and faster (9.30am) starts. Anyone expecting to take longer than three hours might even consider an earlier still start at 8.45am. Start - Birchin Clough 109915; CP1 - Spring 1 - Well 09158990; CP2 - Spring 2 - below Sandy Heys path 06708901; CP3 - Spring 3 - south of Noe Stool 08308659; CP4 - Spring 4 - under Seal Edge 101892; Finish - Birchin Clough. Route notes and map available from the route link.

The ROs' preference is for all runners to visits all four springs and the race has been moved to a weekend morning to facilitate this aim. Slower runners are however welcome to visit just three springs (no.s 1, 2 & 4), albeit their efforts will not thereby gain any credit in the 40@40 league. The ROs also advise that runners of whatever speed do not attempt the Calendar's very own two spring variant (which the latter, naturally blameless in all things, continues to pin on the Safety Officer and Cap'n Harmer).

Prospective runners should be aware that there will be no support along the way and you must take sole responsibility for your own safety. Navigation skills and your own maps required. Prior plans for route choice and escape routes are a good idea, and the navigationally challenged should certainly consider running in pairs. Full FRA kit recommended, plus food, a bivvy bag, and mobile phone. You will also need dry gear to change into at the end, and money for the train ride back to Sheffield. If you've still not done the Lunge, then the 40@40 provides the perfect excuse to tick this DP classic off your bucket list. The usual time trial format from RO Dave Holmes' mansion, to wit you start any time you like between 4pm and 7pm, post your time on the garage door upon your return, then settle down to enjoy the BYO BBQ and beer drinking in Dave's back garden.

All welcome, so long as you understand that the course is somewhere on the spectrum between 'idiosyncratic' and 'dangerous', and that you take part ENTIRELY at your own risk. Dave is liable to lay on some superior home brew, but please do bring along something to barbecue and drink. It would also help if you let Dave know in advance that you're coming, 'so that he knows how many baps to buy'.

It is our good fortune that the fortieth anniversary falls in an Olympic year, ensuring that this quadrennial instant classic (first run in recognition of the brown vests who just missed selection to the 2012 London Games) can take its rightful place as part of the 40@40 league. Final date to be confirmed by RO Andy Harmer (not sure whether the precedent established in 2012 was for the race to take place at some point during the games, or just thereabouts). The route, unless Mr H has other plans, is:

park at layby on Snake Road at SK130895 (limited space, please carshare)

Start: Footbridge SK131893

  1. Dean Hill SK132890 **
  2. Madwoman Stones SK137881
  3. Wall End SK128885
  4. Boulder (large) SK123881
  5. Dunge Clough, wall end SK123893
  6. Holly tree by wall SK126889
  7. Dean Hill SK132890 **

Finish at the cars SK130895

** Here's hoping the appropriate point on Dean Hill will once again be marked by a Graham's rather fine crocheted (or was it just cross-stitched?) DP "flag". Perhaps Nicky could also be persuaded to bring along her rather more streamlined, but somewhat taller too, DP event sail - to mark the finish say? And how about Mr Fulton in his best woolen DP vest and shorts?

Our anniversary year could not, of course, pass without a rare running of this most genuine of DP articles complete, we would hope, with Mr Hayman's ring of sausages to the winner, and a large bowl of something tasty to all runners in the pub afterwards.

Date and final details to be confirmed with the club chaplain; but we can expect:

Start at 10 am, from the Cobden View Hotel, Crookes, with post-race refreshment and debriefing from 12 noon.

The route (about 10m with about 1500 feet of ascent) visits the following landmarks:

1) Shirecliffe Hill viewing platform (still? vandalised),

2) Wincobank Hill iron-age camp and trig point (site of),

3) Footbridge over railway below Wardsend Cemetery,

4) Lamp-post at top corner of the Bolehills, end of Longfield Road (be sure to touch it).

Fri 2nd Sep 2016 7:00pmOtherThornbridge Weekend

Annual club camping weekend at Thornbridge Hall for all the family, Friday evening to Sunday pm. The campsite had already been booked out for the bank holiday weekend before we came calling, so we're a week later on this occasion.

Expect the usual fun and games including Ashford-in-the-Water fell race (finishing in-the-water); kids fell race; Friday night something or other - following the Great Longstone Chase for the keener amongst us; cake & cava in the Sat late afternoon sunshine (not guaranteed); BBQ Sat night (bring something to blacken, and an instrument for entertainment if you aspire to such things); three-legged orienteering; kids & big kids cyclo-cross race; plus plenty of opportunities to cycle on the Monsal trail, run off your hangover on Longstone Edge on the Sunday morning, or just hang out on the campsite.

All welcome, especially new members, and do bring kids and partners. Surprising though it may seem, many have come away reporting themselves very satisfied with their DP 'full immersion' experience. The facilities are remarkably sophisticated for a DP event, including 'luxury' industrial kitchen, hot showers and loads of room to run around outside and in. Last year they charged £10 per adult per night/day and £5 for kids (under 5s go free). After several years of sterling service, Kirsty and Simon are stepping down as organisers, to be replaced by Bronwen and Tim Ray ... which means at least one of our new organisers will have some nous about them (so much so that the dates for 2017 are already booked, instantly going one better than the Pattons).

The classic Ashford-on-the-water route, provided always that sufficient numbers of entrants can remember it, culminating with a compulsory dip in the water at the finish. Some kind of kids race is also likely from the campsite in the afternoon, should you wish to make a day of it with the family (but haven't the heart to commit them to the full overnight extravaganza).

Wed 5th Oct 2016 6:45pmDPFR raceHunter Wreck Race

RO Andy Harmer. Exact date tbc. Park on Windy Bank, at top of Wilkin Hill. Slower runners start at 6.45, others at 7.00. Little climb, but our RO has leavened the mix with a bit of rough ground and enough indistinct features to insure you'll be running around in ever decreasing circles. Inexperienced warts should very definitely consider running in pairs/groups ... as should the rest of us, if conditions dictate.

Start - fell gate (243925); CP1 - New Cross (rems of, 215927); CP2 - Hunter Wreck (208943, or SK2085594342 to be more precise); CP3 Emlin Trig (240934); Finish at fell gate (243925, as per start).

For reasons known only to Andy, the Dukes Drive is out of bounds east of Flint Hill. The recommended line back from the wreck follows the 'corridor route', which crosses Hobson Moss Dike (220938) via Tom's 'better than some' ruin (220940), the rocks on Wet Slack and the Wet Slack Ridge. And having tried it last year, I would definitely not recommend returning via Thornseat Moor.

Kit: Full waterproof body cover & spare layers for winter mountain weather, head torch with spare batteries or backup torch, whistle, compass & map, & survival / bothy bag all deemed essential. A mobile phone will do no harm either.

Sat 26th Nov 2016 10:30amDPFR raceWarts' Revenge

Annual pilgrimage across Rud Hill via, or rather under, Burbage Bridge, up the Plummet, over Higger, down to the Mitchell Field finger post, up Callow Bank (all the way to top please), across to the Cowper Stone, wet feet to Stanedge Pole (remains of), then homeward along the routinely bleak Friar's Ridge to Rud Hill (again), and by one of a number of lines through the quarries to the finish. Post-race liquids in the Norfolk Arms to celebrate our survival. Electrical prizes this year, it is to be hoped, will be provided oncemore from the Alladin's Cave that is Austin's cellar.

Not much climb, but that is more than made up for by the rough and wet terrain - and as last year's participants fully demonstrated, surprisingly easy to mess up the lines too. A race which should not to be underestimated by the uninitiated. Full FRA kit and mobile phone recommended. Starts at the access point on Ringinglow Road. See link for location of controls. Fri 25th Aug 2017 7:00pmOtherThornbridge Weekend

Annual club camping weekend at Thornbridge Hall for all the family, Friday evening to Sunday pm ... and in the calendar fully eighteen months in advance, thereby indicating the hyper-efficiency of the new regime (if not of its tractors).

Expect the usual fun and games including Ashford-in-the-Water fell race (finishing in-the-water); kids fell race; Friday night something or other; cake & cava in the Sat late afternoon sunshine (not guaranteed); BBQ Sat night (bring something to blacken, and an instrument for entertainment if you aspire to such things); three-legged orienteering; kids & big kids cyclo-cross race; plus plenty of opportunities to cycle on the Monsal trail, run off your hangover on Longstone Edge on the Sunday morning, or just hang out on the campsite.

Bookings and expressions of interest etc., in due course, to Bronwen and Tim Ray.

Graham Berry's one-off 70th birthday race was such a gem that the webmaster and calendar agreed in the pub immediately following that we cannot let Graham's 80th pass without a repeat running.  With a winning time on a fine day in December 2014 of 2hrs 15mins, and some stalwarts taking over 3 hours, the 9am start certainly needs retaining for the increasingly more mature.  As to other arrangements - all in good time, folks, all in good time.
