Sat 1st Oct 2016 11:00amDPFR raceRivelin Foxtrot

RO Mike Hayes lives up to his reputation with this thrash through the thicker undergrowth of the Rivelin Valley, with a twist.

The race starts and finished from the club hut, taking in four checkpoints (GRs as deduced by t'webmaster, so to be taken with a large pinch of salt):

CP1. The Dog's Grave SK265864

CP2. Wyming Brook Knoll SK274863

CP3. Waterworks Stepping Stones SK284867

CP4. Allen Sike Spring SK284862

For further details, see today's news story on the front page of the website (30th September 2016).

For the purposes of the 40@40, league points will (very probably) be awarded in line with the 'Sherpa rankings'.

Wed 5th Oct 2016 6:45pmDPFR raceHunter Wreck Race

RO Andy Harmer. Park on Windy Bank, at top of Wilkin Hill. Slower runners start at 6.45, others at 7.00. Little climb, but our RO has leavened the mix with a bit of rough ground and enough indistinct features to insure you'll be running around in ever decreasing circles. Inexperienced warts should very definitely consider running in pairs/groups ... as should the rest of us, if conditions dictate.

Start - fell gate (243925); CP1 - New Cross (rems of, 215927); CP2 - Hunter Wreck (208943, or SK2085594342 to be more precise); CP3 Emlin Trig (240934); Finish at fell gate (243925, as per start).

For reasons known only to Andy, the Dukes Drive is out of bounds east of Flint Hill. The recommended line back from the wreck follows the 'corridor route', which crosses Hobson Moss Dike (220938) via Tom's 'better than some' ruin (220940), the rocks on Wet Slack and the Wet Slack Ridge ... and may be, just may be, I'll actually get it right this year. It may be my last opportunity to do so for a while since the RO has hinted the race may rested for a while after this year's 40@40 running.

Kit: Full waterproof body cover & spare layers for winter mountain weather, head torch with spare batteries or backup torch, whistle, compass & map, & survival / bothy bag all deemed essential. A mobile phone will do no harm either.

Sat 19th Nov 2016 9:30amDPFR raceNorth Grain There and Back

Graham B's Birthday Race makes a welcome 40@40 return in the RO's 72nd year chiefly, it seems, because the race is too good to wait until his 80th for a repeat. With some stalwarts taking over 3 hours to complete in its inaugural running, there will again be an earlier 9am start for the less fleet of foot. This is a challenging route across classic remote Dark Peak terrain, requiring full FRA kit, mobile phone, bivvy bag and emergency food. Greener runners may want to pair up if the weather is inclement and/or the clag is down.

Route as in 2014:-

Start: King's Tree (SK167938)

Sat 26th Nov 2016 10:30amDPFR raceWarts' Revenge

Annual pilgrimage across Rud Hill via, or rather under, Burbage Bridge, up the Plummet, over Higger, down to the Mitchell Field finger post, up Callow Bank (all the way to top please), across to the Cowper Stone, wet feet to Stanedge Pole (remains of), then homeward along the routinely bleak Friar's Ridge to Rud Hill (again), and by one of a number of lines through the quarries to the finish. Post-race liquids in the Norfolk Arms to celebrate our survival. Electrical prizes this year, it is to be hoped, will be provided oncemore from the Alladin's Cave that is Austin's cellar.

Not much climb, but that is more than made up for by the rough and wet terrain - and as last year's participants fully demonstrated, surprisingly easy to mess up the lines too. A race which should not to be underestimated by the uninitiated. Full FRA kit and mobile phone recommended. Starts at the access point on Ringinglow Road. See link for location of controls. Sat 17th Dec 2016 11:00amDPFR raceHeadstone Headache

ROs and past members Pete & Trish Kohn (with a little help from Tim T) revive a former DP classic last run nineteen years ago (following which permission to run the race as an open eventwas withdrawn by the landowner). That final (8th) running was chiefly made notable, it would appear, by Andy Harmer opting to run the final mile or so of the race on tarmac. The finer details of the route will be revealed in due course, but we understand it to involve - at the very least - a circuit of the goalposts outside the Sportsman and a visit to the eponymous Headstone. Just in from the chair: "The route is: Start on edge of playing fields car park, around the far goal posts (to split up the field which at times exceeded 200!) back past the start/line, out the gate, along to 3 merry lads garden – all other roads are out of bounds – then any route to/from the headstone (but not through the back garden of the house by the car park/dam wall). Some of the old route is overgrown but, like the Foxtrot, will just add to the challenge of the event – we aren't interested in records!" Ideal preparation for the Crookstone Crashout on the morrow then.

The 66th running of the race will start/finish as usual from Rowlee bridge, SK150891. Route to be confirmed as and when, but assuming we've run the crashout proper in June, then we can expect some thrashing around on the sides of Kinder to prepare us for a full week of festivities running up to Xmas.

Early start 09-30; whippets 09-50. Full FRA kit, survival bag and mobile phone all strongly recommended.

Meet at Tha Sportsman for a vague ramble over to the Headstone, followed at 7.15pm sharp by the closest thing to a dawn chorus the assembled company can muster ... to the tune of something unfamiliar. Expect the repertoire to include at least one unfathomable South Yorkshire carol and a variety of unlikely lines back to the pub afterwards; all rounded off with a pint or two and possibly even some reluctant good cheer from our favorite stay-away old warts.

All welcome; families, runners, non-runners ... even men in fairy lights, if we're really lucky.

Fri 25th Aug 2017 7:00pmOtherThornbridge Weekend

Annual club camping weekend at Thornbridge Hall for all the family, Friday evening to Sunday pm ... and in the calendar fully eighteen months in advance, thereby indicating the hyper-efficiency of the new regime (if not of its tractors).

Expect the usual fun and games including Ashford-in-the-Water fell race (finishing in-the-water); kids fell race; Friday night something or other; cake & cava in the Sat late afternoon sunshine (not guaranteed); perhaps an impromptu EGM to spice things up a little (again, not guaranteed); BBQ Sat night (bring something to blacken, and an instrument for entertainment if you aspire to such things); may be some three-legged orienteering; kids & big kids cyclo-cross race; plus plenty of opportunities to cycle on the Monsal trail, run off your hangover on Longstone Edge on the Sunday morning, or just hang out on the campsite.

All welcome, especially new members, and kids and partners particularly welcome. Surprising though it may seem, many have come away reporting themselves very satisfied with their DP 'full immersion' experience. The facilities are remarkably sophisticated for a DP event, including 'luxury' industrial kitchen, hot showers and loads of room to run around outside and in. Costs something like £10 per adult per night/day and £5 for kids (under 5s go free), but organisers Bronwen and Tim Ray should be able to reveal all in time.

Part of the club's annual Thornbridge weekend, but you don't need to be camping to pitch up. The classic Ashford-on-the-water route, provided always that sufficient numbers of entrants can remember it, culminating with a compulsory dip in the water at the finish. Some kind of kids race is also likely from the campsite in the afternoon, should you wish to make a day of it with the family (but haven't the heart to commit them to the full overnight extravaganza).

Graham Berry's one-off 70th birthday race was such a gem that the webmaster and calendar agreed in the pub immediately following that we cannot let Graham's 80th pass without a repeat running.  With a winning time on a fine day in December 2014 of 2hrs 15mins, and some stalwarts taking over 3 hours, the 9am start certainly needs retaining for the increasingly more mature.  As to other arrangements - all in good time, folks, all in good time.
