Sat 10th Dec 2016 10:30amDPFR raceBurbage Nuts

RO Ken Jones. Looks like the official Nuts race hasn't be run since 2005, so let's hope Ken can remember where it goes. Starts and finishes at the top of Porter Clough, by way of Houndkirk Hill, Higgar Tor, Stanage Pole and Rud Hill ... and involves, if we are to believe wikipedia, the collection of a variety of "... fruit composed of a hard shell and a seed, which is generally edible". Well we shall see. A bit more clarity on checkpoints etc. to follow in due course.

Sun 11th Dec 2016 3:00pmOtherBradfield Christmas Score

'90 minute score event' visiting the Bradfield Parish Council Christmas trees. Start/finish chez Groom (Kris and Wendy), the ROs, with mulled wine and nibbles afterwards. Fancy dress 'not compulsory', but best bring a headtorch and reflective clothing as the race runs through dusk, finishing in the dark. The ROs allege that optimum routes will involve 'some interesting off-road sections' (which could be avoided) and 'pretty big hills' (which can't). Format similar to Urban Nights, 'but with a scruffier garage'. Please email Kris in advance if you want to take part.

Map and control descriptions to print. (The circles appear to be a shadow of themselves in Preview on the Mac but are good in Acrobat reader).

Sat 17th Dec 2016 11:00amDPFR raceHeadstone Headache

ROs and past members Pete & Trish Kohn (with a little help from Tim T) revive a former DP classic last run nineteen years ago (following which permission to run the race as an open eventwas withdrawn by the landowner). That final (8th) running was chiefly made notable, it would appear, by Andy Harmer opting to run the final mile or so of the race on tarmac. The finer details of the route will be revealed in due course, but we understand it to involve - at the very least - a circuit of the goalposts outside the Sportsman and a visit to the eponymous Headstone. Just in from the chair: "The route is: Start on edge of playing fields car park, around the far goal posts (to split up the field which at times exceeded 200!) back past the start/line, out the gate, along to 3 merry lads garden – all other roads are out of bounds – then any route to/from the headstone (but not through the back garden of the house by the car park/dam wall). Some of the old route is overgrown but, like the Foxtrot, will just add to the challenge of the event – we aren't interested in records!" Ideal preparation for the Crookstone Crashout on the morrow then.

Sun 18th Dec 2016 9:30amDPFR raceCrookstone and Beyond

The 66th running of the race will start/finish as usual from Rowlee bridge, SK150891. Route to be confirmed as and when, but assuming we've run the crashout proper in June, then we can expect some thrashing around on the sides of Kinder to prepare us for a full week of festivities running up to Xmas.

The good Cap'n has declared the course to be:

  • Rowlee bridge, SK150891
  • CP1 madwoman's stones 136880
  • CP2 Wall corner Rowland cote moor 132871
  • CP3 wall bend/stream S of Dean hill 132887
  • Cp4 Crookstone knoll 144883
  • Rowlee bridge, SK150891
The map says it's about 6.5Km, 480m climb in a straight line.

Early start 09.30; whippets 09.45; greyhounds 10.00 - expect a winning time of ~60 minutes. Full FRA kit, survival bag and mobile phone all strongly recommended.

Wed 21st Dec 2016 6:30pmClub runHeadstone Carols

Meet at Tha Sportsman for a vague ramble over to the Headstone, followed at 7.15pm sharp by the closest thing to a dawn chorus the assembled company can muster ... to the tune of something unfamiliar. Expect the repertoire to include at least one unfathomable South Yorkshire carol and a variety of unlikely lines back to the pub afterwards; all rounded off with a pint or two and possibly even some reluctant good cheer from our favorite stay-away old warts.

All welcome; families, runners, non-runners ... even men in fairy lights, if we're really lucky.

Sat 24th Dec 2016 9:30amOtherChristmas Eve Breakfast Run

The usual day and format – meet at Hunters Bar roundabout for a 9.30 departure. If you want to meet us en-route we will be running up Porter Clough to the top, through the quarries and across to Ox Stones, across the bogs to Burbage Edge North, descend to Green Drive and down to Padley Gorge to arrive at Grindleford Station Cafe for 11-11.15'ish where we will scoff plenty of unhealthy fried food and drink Pints of Tea before catching the train back to Sheffield at 12.50 (arrives 13:05). Then wash it all down with some excellent Beer at the Sheffield Tap (station pub).

For those not wishing to run out there are trains leaving Sheffield at 9.14 (arrives Grindleford 9.28) and again at 10.14 and 11.14 so plenty of opportunity to have a walk before joining the sweaty runners for breakfast.

A very particular Dark Peak gem – neither for the faint-hearted nor the level-headed. Start 6am from Loxley School, but aim to pitch up by 5.40am (being careful not to disturb the neighbours). This allows time to load your kit in the support van, cough up your petrol and scran money (£15 last year; Dave H to confirm nearer the time), and to pose for the obligatory out of focus team photo. If you're planning to join in the fun, for part or whole of the day, please advise Dave Holmes in advance via the Bradfield Boundary Run FB Group, so he knows how many to cater for. Expect all manner of jammy sarnies and hot liquids at the support points, and fine soup and novelty home-brewed ale at Dave's pad afterwards. For a taste of what's gone before, see the Facebook site here. Always a grand day out with friends, and an excellent introduction to running a long way in a group with road support for anyone vaguely considering a BG some time in the future. All welcome.

Fri 25th Aug 2017 7:00pmOtherThornbridge Weekend

Annual club camping weekend at Thornbridge Hall for all the family, Friday evening to Sunday pm ... and in the calendar fully eighteen months in advance, thereby indicating the hyper-efficiency of the new regime (if not of its tractors).

Expect the usual fun and games including Ashford-in-the-Water fell race (finishing in-the-water); kids fell race; Friday night something or other; cake & cava in the Sat late afternoon sunshine (not guaranteed); perhaps an impromptu EGM to spice things up a little (again, not guaranteed); BBQ Sat night (bring something to blacken, and an instrument for entertainment if you aspire to such things); may be some three-legged orienteering; kids & big kids cyclo-cross race; plus plenty of opportunities to cycle on the Monsal trail, run off your hangover on Longstone Edge on the Sunday morning, or just hang out on the campsite.

All welcome, especially new members, and kids and partners particularly welcome. Surprising though it may seem, many have come away reporting themselves very satisfied with their DP 'full immersion' experience. The facilities are remarkably sophisticated for a DP event, including 'luxury' industrial kitchen, hot showers and loads of room to run around outside and in. Costs something like £10 per adult per night/day and £5 for kids (under 5s go free), but organisers Bronwen and Tim Ray should be able to reveal all in time.

Graham Berry's one-off 70th birthday race was such a gem that the webmaster and calendar agreed in the pub immediately following that we cannot let Graham's 80th pass without a repeat running.  With a winning time on a fine day in December 2014 of 2hrs 15mins, and some stalwarts taking over 3 hours, the 9am start certainly needs retaining for the increasingly more mature.  As to other arrangements - all in good time, folks, all in good time.
