Roy Small and Hugh Cotton are organising a time trial event to mark the centenary of the battle that decimated the Sheffield Pals battalion on the morning of 1st July 1916.
Venue: The Sportsman Pub at Redmires; to be followed by a BBQ.
Setting off any time you like between 5:30pm and 7:30pm, the 12km course visits three significant sites - Roper Hill, Hill 60 (presumed site of) and Ocean View - used in the training of the battalion.
The Dark Peak Fell Runners connection to the events of July 1916 stems from our use of the last remaining hut that was used by the Sheffield Pals who lived and trained at Lodge Moor Army Camp directly adjacent to the Sportsman Pub. We are also hoping to pull together a small exhibition of materials/artefacts on the night relating to the Pals' and other military use of the Redmires area.
