Race 4 Lords Seat to Chapel Gate results
Race 5 Mam Tor trig to Dave's Van parked at Odin's Mine results
Great to see the rising star Pete Davies out for this and increase the field for the biggest turnout so far in the downhill race series ….4 people!
Jon Pemberton came with the plan to meet up at Odin's mine for a decent warm up to Lords seat. He also had the idea to do another downhill race from Mam Tor trig on the way back to our cars and later on when we met Dave S and he said the same thing, it was decided. Anyway we set off for Lords seat, Jon and Pete were pushing quite a bit and not wanting to get dropped I increased my pace and got to the top of Mam Tor first (a bit more effort than I wanted to put in for a gentle warm up) only to realise we weren't going to Mam Tor we were going to Lords Seat, while I thought this through Jon ran past and pipped me to the Trig… bugger - Jon 1 Dave 0 Pete 0. We set off down to Mam Nick, Jon stayed on the path while I got a better line on a grassy trod and reached the gate first…. boom Dave1, Jon 1, Pete 0. Now I like how this is going down but so much for starting the downhill races on fresh legs. We pushed all the way to Lords Seat having mini battles up every little incline and to every stile. When we got there I mentioned I didn't want this to be the start, I wanted to start directly at the top of the hill above the stile at Chapel gate which you cross before the final ascent on the Horse hill tor race. I also wanted to start right on the edge and the reason for this was so there would be no flat running just eyeballs out descending down to the bottom. Pete thought it would be good to start from Lords seat and run to the gate and that did look good as it wasn't clear which would be the best line to take. We couldn't decide which to go for so waited for Dave Sykes to arrive and make the call. He liked Pete's idea too but said to go with mine seen as though it was my race. "It's not my race it's ours" I said but we went with my option and I was pleased we did.
Standing at the top of the hill I could feel the fear and knew this was going to be crazy, we had a look over the edge to scope our lines and then walked back up to the highest point. My money was on Dave to win this and even though he was playing on small niggles from Wasdale he didn't disappoint. I set us off and straight away Dave shot off like a crazy animal just let out of its cage, his arms going all over the shop. Jon was near me and we battled but Dave had built up some right distance in the first few seconds. This is mental; I had got in front of Jon and started to close the gap on Dave… There's no time to hold back if I'm gonna catch him then need to go all out. Dave won easily (3 seconds) followed by myself then Jon then Pete. It was over so quickly (2 minutes for me) but it was just too awesome.
We climbed back up heading for Lords' seat, I was knackered now but Pete seemed to have just got warmed up and he powered up the stiff climb with Jon not far behind. When Dave and I summited Pete and Jon were waiting for us. Pete 1, Jon 1, Dave 1, Dave S 0. We had another battle to the top of Mam tor and I just pipped Jon which put me in the lead of the unofficial races that we weren't actually having but maybe we were and just hadn't spoke about it.
So it was time for the second downhill race of the evening, Mam Tor trig down to my van which was parked near Odin's Mine. Dave S was opting for the left side of Mam Tor while Pete, Jon and I were all going right. I was getting nervous again. 3,2,1 Go…. This time Jon was off like a rocket, Pete and I chasing him down. Jon shouted something back to us and Pete said something like "this is f..king crazy" it was clear Jon had won this in the first few seconds as every time I looked up, he had increased the gap more and more. Pete and myself battled down to the broken road and through the woods with Pete hanging back while I showed him the lines (albeit very bad ones). Approaching the gate were my van was parked I sensed I was in for another second place but cheeky Pete hurdled the fence and we had a sprint finish with Pete beating me for second place. Dave S who as I mentioned took the left side descent from Mam Tor came in about a minute later showing the right side is truly faster.
It was good vibes all evening and even though the two races we did only took about 6 minutes we had been out for an hour and had a good run pushing each other on the climbs and getting a good work out. So maybe this is the way to go… doing 2 races in one night? Certainly seems more worthwhile to come out for and if you like running downhill maybe you should come, I think you'll love these races! Also if you're a bit unsure or uneasy then Dave Sykes said he would descend with someone and give them pointers so that's worth thinking about – free downhill coaching from one of the best descenders in the club!
The date for the next race is Thursday 10th August from Lose Hill at 7:30 pm and it's a double bubble again. The orange route is race 1 and the green route race2 (see attached map).
Hope to see you there.
