Hilary's report from the Grand Raid Cristalp

Thanks to all of you who have sponsored me, so far l have raised for Dawn Hopkinson's charity 'Challenge Cancer through Adventure' £230 via the website and £150 in person - FANTASTIC! And the website is still open.

Grand Raid Cristalp - the Longest Mountain Bike Race in the World!

Well we think that the BG, Paddy Buckley and the Ramsey are hard, try doing it as a head to head race! In the Alps they certainly know how to think up very, very long, hard head to head races...................................on mountain bikes and foot (eg Tour du Mont Blanc Race!)
The race starts in Verbier, the elite ski town in the heart of the Swiss Alps and heads off to Grimentz and covers 131km with 4700m climb and crosses 6 valleys and must be accomplished within strict time limits. l was one of the 33 women to start among 1000 riders who lined up on the start line. Despite appalling weather conditions, l made it to the final hurdle but admitted defeat after missing the 90km checkpoint by 10 mins. Overnight rain had made the conditions very difficult especially on the steeper sections, all the riders finished covered in mud and exhausted. The leaders all took between 30-60 minutes longer than previous years and 3km before the top of the final hill was unrideable so they had to carry their bikes. l was timed out at the bottom of this hill after riding for 8hrs non-stop. Although l was unsuccessful in the race, l really enjoyed the mad mountain bike races l used for training eg 100km races in Wales, 24hr solo relay and a 10 day trip round Iceland! If l do it again maybe l'll buy a new bike - something light and fast.........! (only joking)
