The 16th and final Sprunce of the year attracted 17 runners despite the increasingly sloppy underfoot conditions both on the moor below Rud Hill and especially in the cow / cabbage field. The fastest times of the week were recorded by Martin Evans (43:36) and new member to be Rachel Thorley (45:22). Ken Jones ran away with the handicap but, as his email shows, none of the rest of us stood a chance.
Ken writes: “… I had a superb run. The elements were kind and the fell running gods smiled down on me. But more importantly, I read the instruction manual for my new shorts and ensured they were not on back to front. Then, with less cruising and more effort I finally peaked in the last race of the series to my utter joy. I only wish I’d bought some new shorts years ago, what a difference they make!
I have been surprised by the popularity of the Sprunce Series and so, depending on the Covid situation, am open to running another series next year. If this does happen I’ll probably drop the current handicap system in favour of scoring along the lines of the Summer Series races.
