Instructions for using the iOrienteering app
iOrienteering is a timing app.
On your phone, download the latest version of the app. (Android v2.2.82 / iOS v2.2.84)
Register/ log in. When you register, remember your USERNAME will be seen on the website with your results and should NOT be your email address.
User your USERNAME to log in (not your email address)
Charge your battery beforehand. Some phones shut down background apps if the battery is too low. This will stop the app working. Take a battery backup with you if you are worried
Restart the phone before setting off. Sometimes you have a lot of apps working in the background. Close down unwanted apps and refresh the phone by restarting it
Make sure you are logged in as you. You cannot save your results if you are not logged in
If your phone acts oddly during the event it is safe to close the app and reopen it or even restart your phone during the event. The app should remember where you are and pick up where it left off.
Remember the phone uses signals from satellites above you. Ideally the phone needs to see these satelites and not be bouncing around too much. Try to keep it stable and high on your body say in a rucksack, bum-bag or arm band
The app beeps and vibrates at a control. Make sure your speaker is turned up. Some older phones can turn off the feature in background, e.g. iOS12, and the phone will be silent. Instead you need to open the app and check the phone has scored the CP after you run through it
If the phone doesn’t move it stops looking for the GPS. You need to move to trigger a GPS search. Going back to the HOME screen and returning to the event also triggers an update.
The Finish code becomes active after 2minutes. Once you start move away from the finish area else it may be a very short event!
These test courses have a map in the app. This feature can be turned off, but I have left it active to help in the testing process
Go to the start location. There are 2 methods to start:
1. If you park away from the start, press the “Prestart” button and the app will start to look for the start location and as you approach the app should automatically beep and start
2. If you park close to the start, ignore the “Prestart” button. Go to the start location and the button text will change to “Start Course”. Press the button when you are ready to set off. The phone should beep
