The race was fast and hard and well worth the running, as the course had lots of short steep ascents 300-600 ft that were short enough to run up and gave lots of descents to recover. More of a long distance cross country run than a fell race as there wasn’t any scope for route choice being on mainly coastal path and farmers fields with the odd promenade to run along. Well worth travelling to with no marshals, which meant you were much more self reliant. Three water and jelly baby stops were much appreciated. The course was very muddy which sucked the life from your legs.
Rob Smith did very well leading the race for a substantial time before local runners picked him off. I was also was going well heading for what was to be my fastest long run so far before I was hit by severe cramps for the first time ever. I still came in at around 3.45 despite crawling the last three miles! I was also wearing road shoes on a very muddy course, which was a huge mistake as this also cost me time.
Apparently there were 153 runners but only 108 finished!
