After hearing that this race was the next best thing to Jura, Richard Hakes & I set off North. We arrived at Strathyre on Saturday morning, met Paul & Tracey on the campsite & settled down to drink tea for a couple of hours before the start. A last minute slap of suncream & we were ready. A great cloudless day.
At the start line we saw Simon Bourne so the Dark Peak team of 4 set off at a cracking pace (well Simon did anyway). Out of the forest & into the hills the pace was fierce. A steep descent followed by a very steep 2000' climb spread the field out a bit, then it was off over the mountains to Stuc a Chroin itself. The amount of marshalls on the hill was amazing & they were all armed with lots of bottles of water courtesy of one of the sponsors. The refreshment was very welcome as it was hot up there.
There was a bit of snow still lying so we managed a bit of sledging & ran back as fast as possible to the forest where 2.5 miles of fast track awaited our tired legs. It's a hell of a tough finish to a tough race.
At the finish there was loads of friendly encouragement, hot soup & more bottled water.
A great race & a super weekend in a very friendly Scottish village with excellent facilities. Highly recommended.
